N.B.: In der zweiten Vorlesungswoche findet für Masterstudierende sowie für Lehramts- und Bachelorstudierende im Vertiefungsmodul Sprachwissenschaft (die nicht ohnehin die Übung "Methods and Theories in Linguistics" schon besucht haben) eine Einführung in wissenschaftliches Arbeiten im CIP-Pool U5/02.23 statt. Hierfür sind Studierende angehalten, sich folgende Termine freizuhalten: Mo, 19.10.2015, 8:15 - 9:45 Uhr ODER 10:15 - 11:45 Uhr ODER 12:15 - 13:45 Uhr UND Do, 22.10.2015, 8:15 - 13:45 Uhr ODER Fr, 23.10.2015, 8:15 - 13:45 Uhr. Zur Terminabstimmung, die in der ersten Semesterwoche stattfinden wird, tragen Sie sich bitte bis spätestens 15. Oktober in folgenden VC-Kurs ein und nehmen an der dortigen Terminabfrage teil: https://vc.uni-bamberg.de/moodle/course/view.php?id=12549. Sie erhalten dann kurzfristig Nachricht, welche Termine Sie wahrnehmen können.

- Description:
The “Middle English Romances” are no clearly defined group of texts. In fact, the anonymously transmitted Middle English tales which are usually considered to be romances are so diverse that every attempt at a brief, general definition is doomed to fail. In this seminar, we will take a closer look at a selection of these stories of love, chivalry, and exemplary heroes some of which are knights of King Arthur’s round table. On the basis of a selection of romances – such as King Horn, Sir Ysumbras, Havelok, Arthour and Merlin, Ywain and Gawain and also the very artful romance Sir Gawain and the Green Knight – we will speak about features of these texts, their background and intended audience, and, especially for Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, about possible interpretations. Although very different in intention and literary capability, some of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales – in particular The Knight’s Tale and Sir Thopas – will be discussed, too. A few romances will be introduced in parts, Alliterative Morte Arthure and Stanzaic Morte Arthur, William of Palerne, and some fifteenth-century prose romances such as The Three Kings’ Sons.
All texts will be read in modern translations or (heavily) annotated originals. In addition, selected Middle English passages will be read, translated, and discussed in class. A reader will be provided on Virtueller Campus at the beginning of term.
While no knowledge of earlier stages of the English language is required for successful participation in this course, students should bring along both interest in the history of English and exploratory spirit.
The Übung, which accompanies the Seminar (Wednesday, 14:15-15:00), is offered for students who want to attain credits in linguistics. It is designed for discussions of linguistic project work and other assignments individually and/or in small groups. Individual arrangements will be made – also, if necessary, concerning the time of the Übung. Therefore clashes with other courses scheduled for the same time slot as the Übung can be avoided.
