'Authentic' Old and Middle English language has recently made some claim to fame in TV series, movies and Youtube performances. Probably most well-known among these are the vernacular scenes in the six seasons of the Canadian-Irish series "Vikings" (2013-2019), where the actors revert to early medieval vernaculars: Old English next to Old Norse, Old French, Old Low Franconian and even Proto-Latgalian. "The use of original languages throughout the series is one of the defining features of Vikings" (Justin Pollard). Public interest in the real historic stages of English is, for instance, also witnessed by the Old English spells in the BBC series "Merlin" (2008-2012). Taken together, this seems to indicate a development away from constructing fictional languages for the characterization of different ethnic groups, which was the preferred option in famous 20^th-century fiction, such as Tolkien's 'Elvish' or the invented 'Klingon' in Startrek. Also, Mystery Plays have recently been produced in original Middle English (or slightly modernized versions thereof), and even Rappers have discovered Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales for themselves on Youtube.

This lecture aims to explain and demonstrate the structure and use of Old English (ca. 700-1100) and Middle English (ca. 1100-1500) on all levels – phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicology, semantics and pragmatics – within the respective socio-historical settings. Before this backdrop of scholarly knowledge, selected modern performances, scenes and songs in Old and Middle English will be discussed in each session. Use of language-learning websites and books will be practiced so that by the end of term the students should be enabled to tackle original Old and Middle English texts themselves and also to evaluate to which degree historical accuracy in modern performances has actually been reached.

Knowledge of Old and/or Middle English is of course no prerequisite for attending this lecture – all students are welcome.

Bei der Wahl Ihres Themas im schriftlichen Staatsexamen in Linguistik haben Sie im Studiengang Lehramt an Gymnasien unter anderem die Möglichkeit, eine mittelenglische oder altenglische Textklausur zu bearbeiten. Wenn Sie sich für die Sprachgeschichte interessieren, sind Sie in diesem Vorbereitungskurs genau richtig. Mindestens zwei Semester vor Ihrem Examen, aber gern auch schon zur Orientierung früher, sollten Sie an diesem Repetitorium teilnehmen, um Ihre Kenntnis der englischen Sprachgeschichte und des Mittelenglischen (gegebenenfalls auch des Altenglischen) zu vertiefen. In dieser Übung werden zum einen theoretische Fragestellungen überblicksartig geklärt, zum anderen geht es um die praktische Bearbeitung von mittelenglischen (und altenglischen) Staatsexamensklausuren der letzten Jahre. Der Schwerpunkt wird in diesem Semester erneut auf der mittelenglischen Textklausur liegen. Die mittelenglischen Klausuren bauen immer auf eine stark eingegrenzte Auswahl aus den Werken Geoffrey Chaucers auf, speziell aus den Canterbury Tales und aus Troilus and Criseyde, woraus zunächst eine Passage zu übersetzen ist. Daher wird zusätzlich ein Intensivblockkurs Übersetzung Mittelenglisch-Deutsch angeboten (0,7 SWS).
Studierende anderer Studiengänge mit vertieftem Interesse an der englischen Sprachgeschichte sind in diesem Kurs ebenfalls willkommen.

'Fixed' expressions, idioms, formulaic language, patterns, constructions: how much of the language that we use is 'new', how much is 'pre-fabricated', that is, governed by 'fixation' in one way or another? How can we describe this kind of lexical fixation, for instance, in idioms such as to sleep like a log, Happy Birthday!, in next to no time, of course, face to face and A friend in need is a friend indeed? And how can we account for idioms with lexical variation and those which are not syntactically well-formed, both of which can be demonstrated by the idiom to trip/dance/tread the light fantastic? And in how far do fixed syntactic patterns which are lexically free, as for instance noun-preposition-noun constructions such as grandfather after grandfather (entered the room), differ from idioms? In which way does this 'fixation' influence our language use (both productive and receptive), and also language development? Which role does frequency of use play in these matters? What is the importance of this topic for teaching English as a foreign language? In order to approach first answers to a selection of these questions we will explore fixation in language on the basis of current studies on idioms (and phraseology in general) as well as on constructions. Among topics that we will discuss are:

• idiom classification
• comparison between constructions and idioms
• the functional and stylistic potential of idioms
• cognitive and psycholinguistic approaches to 'formulaic language'
• learning (about) idioms and constructions in a foreign language
• exploring idioms and constructions by means of corpus linguistics
• the development of idioms and constructions in the history of English
• And, last but not least, the seminar will also quite practically enhance students' knowledge of English idioms.

The Übung which accompanies the seminar (Wednesday, 12:15-13:00) is designed for discussions of project work and other assignments individually and/or in small groups. Die Linguistische Werkstatt ist eine Vortragsreihe mit Diskussionscharakter, in der ein breites Spektrum an linguistischen Fragestellungen behandelt wird. Vorträge werden sowohl von in Bamberg tätigen also auch auswärtigen Sprachwissenschaftlerinnen und Sprachwissenschaftlern gehalten; auch Promovierende können die Ergebnisse ihrer Arbeit vortragen und zur Diskussion stellen. Die Reihe soll vor allem ein Diskussionsforum bieten, das über die Grenzen der einzelnen Fächer hinweg unterschiedliche Ansätze und Fragestellungen innerhalb der Linguistik umfasst. Promovierende der BaGL können die regelmäßige Teilnahme an der Werkstatt als Teil ihrer Pflichtveranstaltungen anrechnen lassen.

5. Informationen für Studierende des Bachelorstudiengangs "Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft":
Die Veranstaltung kann für Studierende des Bachelorstudiengangs "Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft" als Vorlesung (2 ECTS) für das Aufbaumodul eingebracht werden. In diesem Fall muss die FlexNow-Lehrveranstaltungsanmeldung, wie auch die FlexNow-Prüfungsanmeldung über den FlexNow-Zugang "Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft" erfolgen.

Why is English like that? Why is knight spelled with a kn and a gh? Why does English have so many synonyms like start, begin, commence or clever, intelligent, astute and bright? How come that we hardly have any in fact only eight inflectional endings in English today? And how are German and English related as they obviously are, when we compare, for instance, goose and Gans, house and Haus, knight and Knecht, light and Licht?
This lecture addresses all these questions, and more. Students will be given an overview of the development of the English language from its earliest attestations in the late 7^th century (Old English) until today in the context of the textual transmission and sociohistorical changes. Selected passages from different periods will be introduced, and special areas of interest are the development of sounds and spelling, grammar, vocabulary and syntax.
This lecture is particularly designed for students of BA "Anglistik/Amerikanistik", Aufbaumodul (2 ECTS). Students from other BA programmes can earn 2 or 4 ECTS points for their Studium Generale (pass/fail), and visiting students can earn 2 or 4 ungraded, pass/fail or graded ECTS points. Everybody else who is interested is of course welcome, too, and may attend the lecture as a guest without ECTS points.
Note that students of Lehramt Gymnasium and of B.A. Medieval Studies in their Basismodul must attend the Uebung "Englische Sprachgeschichte", not this lecture.
