August 2009); Tutorien "Wissenschaftliches Arbeiten" und "Einführung in die Datenbankrecherche für Anglisten" (Eintrag jeweils über den Virtuellen Campus! Siehe Schwarzes Brett in der U9/2. - Jane Austen's witty, perceptive and romantic novels have delighted readers for two hundred years. Although deeply rooted in the manners and customs of her time, the issues addressed in Austen's work still seem topical enough: myriads of films or TV-series on the novels (most eminently the unforgettable BBC Pride-and-Prejudice with Colin Firth of Bridget Jones fame), on Austen's life (e.g. Becoming Jane Austen or Jane Austen Regrets), or the plights of ardent Janeites (The Jane Austen Book Club or Lost in Austen) testify to the topicality of Austen's work in our times.
In our seminar, we will take a closer look at those cherished novels, discussing Austen's style, her representation of gender roles, her comments on taste and culture, as well as social and political issues of her time. Beginning with some extracts from her juvenilia, we shall analyse four novels in greater detail: Northanger Abbey, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park and Persuasion. In doing so, we will also consider contemporary adaptations of these texts (e.g. film versions).
The course will include one or two guest lectures by eminent Austen scholars. A site on the Virtual Campus with an outline of the course, texts and topics for presentations will be available for this class from March on. Access on this site will be given upon registration.

regular active participation, term paper in English according to the style sheet (3000-4000 words, deadline: 24.08.2009); compulsory tutorials "Wissenschaftliches Arbeiten" and "Einführung in die Datenbankrecherche für Anglisten" (registration for tutorials via "Virtueller Campus", see the notice-board at the U9/2nd floor and "News" at the homepage of the department)
