- In this course we will discuss the works of last year s Man Booker Prize-winner Julian Barnes.
Born in Leicester in 1946, Barnes worked as a lexicographer on the OED before moving into journalism and becoming a writer.
The 'chameleon of British letters' appropriates and mashes up various literary forms - biography, history, the essay and combines them into what his editors label and market as 'novels'.
Reading Barnes s texts will allow us to explore a wide range of narrative modes and identify both conventions and (self-reflexive) experiments with literary form. A postmodern writer par excellence, Barnes addresses questions of personal and collective memory and forgetting, history (writing), narrative evasion and repression and gender(ed) relationships. By discussing Barnes s works over the decades and his recent success as Man Booker Prize winner, we will be able to identify trends in recent British fiction and learn about different narratological approaches towards the (contemporary) novel. Additionally, we will discuss why Barnes is so well received on the Continent, and in France especially.
We will focus on three novels: A History of the World in 10½ Chapters (1989), which combines a group of prose pieces that initially do not seem to fit together; Arthur & George (2005), Barnes s Neo-Victorian take on a partly historical, partly fictitious criminal case Arthur Conan Doyle gets involved in; The Sense of an Ending (2011), a prototypically postmodern novella on the challenges of memory.
Additionally, we will read excerpts from England, England (1998), Barnes s satire on notions of Englishness and pieces from Pulse (2011), his most recent collection of short prose.
