- Inhalte/Contents
Die Übung/das Kolloquium wendet sich vornehmlich an Studierende der Britischen Kultur in höheren Semestern. Es versteht sich als offenes wissenschaftliches Forum, in dem B.A.- und M.A.-Arbeiten, Magisterarbeiten, Dissertationen oder andere kulturwissenschaftlich relevante Projekte auch unter Beteiligung von Gästen zur Diskussion stehen. Zugleich bietet dieses Forum auch die Möglichkeit, eher formal orientierte Fragestellungen der Praxis zu diskutieren (z. B. Präsentationsformen bei Vorträgen/Referaten, Redaktion von Texten).
Zudem werden berufsorientierte Veranstaltungen durchgeführt, die den Studierenden Einblick in verschiedene Berufsmöglichkeiten geben sollen.
Teilnahme an dem Kolloquium und den Exkursionen erfolgt auf persönliche Einladung.
Inhalte für Vertiefungsmodul: ein Spezialgebiet. In diesem Modul werden die Kenntnisse einer weiteren Epoche bzw. einer weiteren kulturwissenschaftlichen Fragestellung vermittelt, die mit eigener regelmäßiger Lektüre begleitet wird. Zudem werden berufsrelevante Schlüsselqualifikationen (z.B. Präsentations- und Kommunikationstechniken) ausdifferenziert und vertieft. Mündliche und schriftliche Präsentation eigener Ergebnisse wird eingeübt.
The colloquium is intended primarily for advanced students of British culture. It is to be understood as an open academic forum in which B.A. and M.A. essays, Magister and other dissertations, or other projects in the realm of cultural studies, can be discussed in the presence of participating guests. This forum offers at the same time the possibility to discuss more formal questions of academic practice (e.g. presentational methods for lectures and presentations, composition of texts).
In addition, sessions will be organized with a more vocational orientation, intended to give the students insight into various professional possibilities.
Participation in the colloquium by personal invitation.
Contents "Vertiefungsmodul": An area of expert knowledge. This module allows students to acquire knowledge of an additional period and of an additional cultural studies problem, all accompanied by appropriate regular reading. Furthermore, certain key professional skills (e.g. presentational and communicational techniques) will be refined and deepened. There will be practice in the spoken and written presentation of the students’ research results

Qualifikationsziele "Vertiefungsmodul": Die Studierenden vertiefen ihre Kenntnisse der englischsprachigen Kulturen sowie der Kulturtheorien. Sie erarbeiten ein Spezialgebiet, rezipieren kritisch aktuelle Forschungsrichtungen unter Beachtung einer angemessenen Fachterminologie und können diese auf komplexe Fragestellungen des Faches anwenden.
Academic outcomes "Vertiefungsmodul": Students deepen their acquaintance with the culture of English speaking countries and also of cultural theory. Each student acquires an area of expert knowledge, takes on board – but in a critical spirit – contemporary tendencies in research, while learning to maintain an appropriate academic register and to apply it to complex discipline-specific problems.

- In diversen Blockseminaren (inklusive Exkursionen) wird das komplexe Thema des Edierens und Kommentierens im Mittelpunkt stehen, wobei Beispiele sowohl zu englischen Autoren als auch deren Übersetzer (z. B. Georg Goyert) im Mittelpunkt stehen. Studierende können sich diese Veranstaltung als Aufbaumodul oder Vertiefungsmodul (ggf. andere Module) anrechnen lassen. Die Länge der Hausarbeiten und das allgemeine Workload richten sich nach der angestrebten Modulprüfung. Die Exkursion wird aus Studienzuschüssen mitfinanziert. - Inhalt:
- "[A]s unknown […] as the darkest reaches of Africa." This description of the backstreets of London, which we encounter in Arthur Machen’s 1895 horror novel The Three Imposters, brings to a head the fear and the fascination of ‘others’ and ‘otherness’ in late nineteenth-century British culture. Irrational forces and grotesque forms seemed to lurk just behind the veneers of Victorian drawing rooms; in those regions just beyond the white patriarchy’s reach; both outside and – alarmingly – inside the borders of Empire. The central focus of this module will be the fin-de-siècle and modernist Gothic tradition in British, Irish, and American literature in the decades around 1900. In particular, we shall consider how literary texts reflected changing conceptions of, and fears about, human and social identity in relation to bodily, natural, racial, and sexual ‘others’. Charles Darwin had brought to the fore the disturbing proximity of man and animal in the evolutionary chain, especially in The Descent of Man (1871). Advances in parasitology added new inflections to fears about infestation and infection. And the coming advent of psychoanalysis would shed uncanny new light on the darkest recesses of the human soul.
Against that backdrop, our seminars will mainly be devoted to short stories and novellas by a variety of writers. Charlotte Perkins Gilman's creepy short story 'The Yellow Wallpaper' (1892) might be set alongside Henry James’ spine-tingling The Turn of the Screw (1898). H.G. Wells’ science fiction romance The Time Machine (1895) will be read in the context of broader, late-Victorian fears of 'Degeneration'. With samples from influential twentieth-century adaptations (e.g. Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, 1979), the course will culminate in sessions devoted to either all or a selection of Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886), Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897), and Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness (1899). By the end of the course, students will be able to use literary texts to uncover the fears, the ambitions, and the identity crises of an important moment in British culture; and to ask what parallels they might find in contemporary culture.

The seminar is an introduction to the essential methodological problems, principles, theoretical models, and historical contexts indispensable for the academic pursuit of British and American cultural studies. The course is conducted in both English and German, in order to familiarize the students with the specialized academic use of both languages.

Grundthemen und Fragestellungen der Kulturwissenschaften konsequent mit literarischen Texten und Lektüren zu verbinden, ihre inhaltlichen Zusammenhänge zu erkennen, systematisch zu rekonstruieren sowie diese kritisch in Wort und Schrift zu analysieren. Es wird ein erster Überblick in kulturwissenschaftliche Analysemodelle und Fachterminologie gewonnen. Ferner werden grundlegende Kompetenzen sowohl formaler als auch zielsprachlicher Art zur Abfassung einer eigenen wissenschaftlichen Arbeit vermittelt. Die kommunikativen und sozialen Kompetenzen der Studierenden werden durch interaktive und projektbezogene Gruppenarbeit gefordert und gefördert.
To relate in a logical fashion the central themes and problems of cultural studies with literary texts, and also to recognize, reconstruct, express and analyse in spoken and written form their mutual relevance. In the first instance the analytical models and special terminology of cultural studies will be established. Thereafter basic skills of both a formal and linguistic nature will be developed, necessary for the composition of each student's own academic essay. Students ability to communicate and interact in an academic setting will be both required and promoted by interactive group projects.

- Shakespeare's plays were primarily intended as scripts for actors, not as texts for readers. These scripts were amended, adapted and rewritten according to the effect they had on the audience during the performance. It has therefore been argued that audiences go to 'hear' a play, to engage with the ideas and argument, and to 'see' a film, to be drawn into the story through filmic tools like lighting, editing and camerawork. Shakespeare's plays have been 'translated' into visual texts from as early as 1899 and film makers continue to be fascinated by their appeal to modern audiences.
This seminar will introduce the students to Shakespeare's comedies - from huge box office successes to lesser known adaptations.
Information about the films etc. will be made available in the course of the semester.

William Shakespeare did not write his plays in isolation. He was one of several extraordinarily talented and innovative playwrights working in the 1590s, 1600s, and 1610s. Their plays drew on older traditions, and would in turn give rise to drama in the decades to come that is also accomplished on its own terms. Indeed, although Shakespeare’s artistic merits did not go unnoticed at the time, other writers had a comparable reputation in his lifetime, and many of their works have entered alongside Shakespeare’s into the canons of English dramatic literature. In the eighteenth century, acclaim for Shakespeare reached such heights that his works became the gold standard of literary judgment: since then, study of his rivals has struggled to free itself from comparisons with Shakespeare. Some of these writers – including Christopher Marlowe, Ben Jonson, and Thomas Middleton - are important enough in their own right to have survived the comparison almost entirely; while others – such as Thomas Kyd, John Fletcher, John Webster, John Ford, to name just a few of the most well-known – produced plays that made unique and enduring contributions to English literature. ‘Shakespeare’s Rivals’ will take students on a brief tour of non-Shakespearean drama, taking a snapshot of dramatic art in England during the most extraordinary century in its history. We will discover how plays shed light on the culture, history and society of that time; and probe the problem of literary value and endurance.
