- Inhalt:
- In a general sense, youth culture describes how the specific identities of young people are formed and expressed through characteristic lifestyles, fashion, music, and leisure activities. More strictly defined, the term refers to groups of young people that show substantial independence from adult society. Most scholars in the fields of cultural studies and sociology agree that the phenomenon did not play a major role before the period after World War II, but some argue that there were instances of youth cultures in the 1920s or even earlier. This seminar follows the development of different youth cultures from the early 20th century to the present day. More significantly, we will try to understand the phenomenon within a theoretical framework and in relation to concepts such as gangs, subcultures, post-subcultures, countercultures, club cultures, street movements, neotribes and others. Questions addressed in the seminar include: How are generational identities constructed? How have economic, political and cultural circumstances contributed to the formation of youth cultures? What is the significance of class in youth cultures and how does the class-consciousness of young people relate to their parents’ culture? What roles do ‘gender’, ‘race’, ‘religion’ and ‘territory’ play? Should youth cultures be regarded as intrinsically subversive? To what extent are they entwined with consumer society? How have youth cultures been portrayed in the media? How has the research on youth cultures developed over time?

- While the term “special relationship” originally described the alliance between the United States and Britain, President John F. Kennedy adapted it to characterize US-Israeli relations. This seminar in American Cultural Studies primarily examines the American perspective, delving into historical arguments regarding the claim that there is not only a community of strategic interests but also of common values and ideals.
In the first segment of the semester, we move beyond recent conflicts and political debates to trace the roots of the bond in a deeper historical and cultural context. Since the Puritans ardently embraced Biblical narratives that imbued the land of Israel with symbolic significance, Americans have viewed their nation as a new manifestation of Biblical Israel. During the War of Independence and the early Republic, the Exodus story captivated the imagination, while Americans also scrutinized the perceived political system of the Biblical Israelites for inspiration in crafting and defending their own constitution. Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, many immigrants regarded America as their “Promised Land”; Civil Rights activists framed their struggle in relation to the ancient liberation story.
In the latter part of the semester, our focus narrows to US relations with the State of Israel. After exploring the American contribution to Zionism and the foundation of Israel in 1948, we will analyze the cultural impacts of major political events such as the Suez Crisis, the Six-Day War, The Yom Kippur War, the Camp David Accords, the Oslo Accords and the Second Intifada. Special attention will be accorded to Evangelical Christians and Jewish-American organizations dedicated to nurturing the alliance. Similarly, we will address the various fluctuations and even fractures in this partnership, from the Obama administration’s efforts to put “daylight” between the countries to the BDS movement’s attempts to delegitimize the Jewish state entirely. Of course, we will not ignore the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and America’s position in it.

- The seminar is an introduction to the essential methodological problems, principles, theoretical models, and historical contexts indispensable for 'doing' British and American cultural studies.
We will be exploring the development of concepts and ideas of 'culture', especially in Britain but also in the US, and particularly from the 19th century all the way through to the present day. We'll be thinking about the relationship between power and culture, and also about the ways in which literary texts and other cultural products reflect, critique, and mediate power relations and imbalances within society. In the process, the seminar will explore themes and questions of politics and ideology; mass media and its social and cultural impacts; ethnicity, race, and multiculturalism; and gender and sexuality.
We'll be examining all these topics through the varied and various prisms of literary texts (short stories, poems, and a drama), film & TV, and essays of philosophy and theory.
Learning outcomes, Skills:
To relate in a logical fashion the central themes and problems of cultural studies with literary texts and cultural products, and also to recognize, reconstruct, express and analyse in spoken and written form their mutual relevance. In the first instance the analytical models and special terminology of cultural studies will be established. Following this, basic skills of both a formal and linguistic nature will be developed. The ability of students to communicate and interact in an academic setting will be promoted and enhanced through interactive group projects.

- This course offers an introduction to key themes and methods in American cultural studies as an interdisciplinary field of inquiry. Thematically, we will explore issues such as religion and immigration, the frontier and regionalism, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, the media and technology, America as nature s nation and America and the world; conceptually, the focus will be on equality and difference as utopian ideas that have shaped American culture from colonial times to the present.
The course is designed to provide you with basic skills in American cultural studies, with a strong emphasis on reading and discussing various kinds of texts in their cultural contexts. Our primary materials will include short stories, poems and excerpts from novels as well as historical documents, essays, political speeches, photographs, popular songs and films, while several theoretical essays will provide us with a language for discussing changing concepts of culture.

- “[A]s unknown […] as the darkest reaches of Africa.” As a description of the backstreets of London, this quotation, from Arthur Machen’s 1895 horror novel The Three Imposters, is typical of tropes of ‘otherness’ routinely employed in late nineteenth-century British culture. As the Empire reached its high-water mark, and British society exulted in its own self-confidence, an anxiety at ‘the alien’ was growing in the shadows and at the margins. Even (or perhaps precisely) at the end of a century that had seen the unprecedented advance of science and technology, both the fear and the fascination around ghosts, monsters, and devils of all kinds was permeating literary and cultural production. A sense that secure borders were crumbling found a virulent focal point in a growing fear of the impact of mass immigration, especially from Eastern Europe.
The primary focus of this seminar will be British and Irish literature and culture of the fin de siècle. In particular, we shall consider how literary texts both figured and reflected insecurities and anxieties about human and social identity in relation to its many ‘others’. Beginning with a contextual introduction, which will present the scientific, philosophical, and medical backdrop to our texts, we shall develop our theoretical framework around Sigmund Freud’s essay ‘Das Unheimliche’ (1919). This will be followed by a selection of Gothic short stories, and novellas and novels that articulate alterity in its myriad forms. We will begin with Robert Louis Stevenson’s chilling ‘tales of terror’ ‘The Body Snatcher’ (1884) and The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886). Moving through Oscar Wilde's satirical -- yet inescapably creepy -- parable, The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891), we will conclude the course with two of the fin de siècle’s greatest novels of aliens and monstrous Others: Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897) and H. G. Wells’ The Time Machine (1895).

- "[T]o define true madness, / What is ’t but to be nothing else but mad?" As Polonius, the would-be sage of Shakespeare’s Hamlet (1609) recognized, the true nature of mental illness is one of human society’s least fathomable riddles. By the early twentieth century, the asylum gates were rattling in strange new ways, even as the mystery remained essentially as intractable as ever. The development of modern psychiatry in the 1870s had challenged old models of disease classification; the fin-de-siècle emergence of psychoanalysis was drawing into question our innate morality and rationality; and a relentless process of urbanization seemed to be intensifying symptoms of such ‘modern’ disorders as schizophrenia and neurasthenia.
After an historical and theoretical reflection on mental illness, our literary explorations will begin with a selection of Stevie Smith’s poems of mental illness. Samuel Beckett’s stage masterpiece, Waiting for Godot (1952), in turn, is an absurdist reflection of the madness of modernity itself in the wake of World War II. We then move into the 1960s, which saw a proliferation of literary treatments of mental illness. After discussing Doris Lessing’s devastating portrayal of female depression in her story ‘To Room 19’ (1963), we will read Jean Rhys’s Wide Sargasso Sea of 1966: a subversive twist on Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, which probes the problematic relationship between colonialism, racial politics, and the exploitation of ‘madness’ as a clinical and social label. We'll then move on to Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar (1963), a searing yet deeply affecting account of a teenager's descent into depression. Finally, we close with a selection from A. S. Byatt’s 1987 collection, Sugar and Other Stories, including ‘The July Ghost’, a poignant reflection on the delicate links between mourning, loss, and mental illness.

- Inhalt:
- Landscape poetry has a long tradition and it reflects the changes in cultural and linguistic attitudes that society has developed towards nature and the environment. Dealing primarily with British and Irish poetry from the 20th century, this seminar will examine the relationship between ourselves and the land we inhabit through the eyes, sensibilities and imagination and language of poetry. Themes dealt with include natural features, working the land, man-made environment, industrialisation, death and violation, and sensibilities. In the foreground throughout is the relationship between ourselves and the ever-changing scenery, both natural and artificial, of the land we inhabit.
Amongst the poets we will be dealing with are Derek Mahon (1941-2000), Dylan Thomas (1914-1953), Louis MacNeice (1907-1963), Seamus Heaney (1939-2013), Ted Hughes (1930-1998), Patrick Kavanagh (1904-1967), John Betjeman (1906-1984), Philip Larkin (1922-1985) and others.

- As well as researching the theme, students should familiarise themselves with the basic principle of Poetics, the understanding of how a poem's different elements come together and produce certain effects on the reader. One recommended general text is Poetic Form: An Introduction (Cambridge Introductions to Literature) by Michael D-. Hurley and Michael 'Neill.

- Inhalt:
- In this seminar, we will take a look at the common symbols that define American patriotism, such as the flag, the national anthem, the Statue of Liberty, the bald eagle, the Liberty Bell and the Pledge of Allegiance. We will elaborate on the history of these symbols as well as their cultural significance nowadays (e.g. traditions, food culture, etc.). Furthermore, we will deal with the representations of patriotism and patriotic symbols in American popular culture such as music, film, sports, and literature.
A brief look at this year's election campaign and the use of patriotism is also part of the seminar program.

- Inhalt:
- In his landmark study of science fiction, Archaeologies of the Future (2007), the Marxist critic Fredric Jameson argued that the paradox of Utopia lies in the fact that it can never truly be represented. As a literal no place , it remains positively unimaginable from the damaged perspective of the present. Still, writers have never stopped trying and as the twentieth century lurched through two world wars, it was utopia s apparent opposite which eventually to exert a far stronger imaginative grip. Even after a turn away from optimistic projections in space and time, the distinction between utopia and dystopia has remained a profoundly ambiguous one; and as many have argued, their literary portrayals often tell us far more about the present than any supposed future .
This seminar takes these theoretical premises as a starting point for an exploration of various utopias, dystopias, and other places in postwar English and German literature. Following a brief exploration of theories of utopia and dystopia, we'll begin with Aldous Huxley s Brave New World (1932), a satire of consumption and capitalism, which suggests that Western society s dreams and nightmares are closer to one another than we might think. We then turn to Philip K. Dick's cult classic, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (1968), which was adapted by Ridley Scott in his science fiction film masterpiece of 1982, Bladerunner. Dick asks the kinds of searching questions about human identity that are developed in a rather different mode and tone, decades later, in Kazuo Ishiguro's haunting novel of 2005, Never Let Me Go. Finally, we'll end on a markedly more hopeful note with Ursula Le Guin's towering science fiction masterpiece, The Dispossessed (1974), an endlessly compelling vision of anarchist utopia which, even on its fiftieth anniversary, remains as timely as ever.

- Inhalt:
- The first half of the 20th century was marked by major upheavals in Britain, such as, for example, the General Strike, the Great Depression, Labour s rise to power as opposed to the decline of the Liberal Party, two World Wars, and the loss of the Empire.
In this seminar, we will be looking into the field of power relationships during this critical period firstly, from a rather theoretical (Foucauldian) angle, and, secondly, from the point of view of literary works. We will especially analyse the portrayal of organised labour/trade unionism in Lewis Grassic Gibbon s novel Sunset Song (1932), Gwyn Jones s novel Times Like These (1936), Idris Davies s long poem The Angry Summer (1943), and Arnold Wesker s play Roots (1958).

- This course is intended as an informal introduction to some of the very best of British and Irish cinema since the 1960s. Before the sessions, we’ll watch some of the most iconic films made by British and Irish directors, and as a group, we’ll discuss both the films themselves and their social, cultural, and political contexts. That may include social and political dramas such as Kes (1969), This is England (2006), and I, Daniel Blake (2016); scabrous black comedies like Withnail and I (1987), Trainspotting (1996), and The Banshees of Inisherin (2022); the melancholic meditations on a changing England, The Remains of the Day (1993), and Atonement (2007); horror classics like The Wicker Man (1973); and even Monty Python’s satire of religion, The Life of Brian (1979), one of comedy history’s most brilliantly controversial milestones.
Absolutely no prior knowledge of film is required: just curiosity, and a willing to check out something new. This session is a great opportunity to encounter or re-encounter some landmarks of the silver screen – from an array of genres – and to practise your conversational English while discussing them. I’m also happy to help you hone your speaking skills, which will certainly come in handy for presentations and oral exams on other courses.

- While American Cultural Studies has consistently recognized the significance of religion in the US, the role of religion has often been overlooked in British Cultural Studies. In recent years, however, the discipline has increasingly acknowledged that religion has been a fundamental aspect of people’s identities in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. This lecture course offers a comprehensive survey of the major trends and events of the religious history of Britain from the Early Modern Period to the present. Rather than dwelling on Biblical and theological matters, the lecture course will demonstrate how important disputes have shaped allegiances, solidarity and hostility within the British context. Naturally, the history of Christianity takes centre stage in our sessions, but we will also explore other religious persuasions as well as processes of secularisation.
