- In this course students will have an opportunity to try out the main skills of language analysis that are introduced in the lecture Introduction to Linguistics . Students will work intensively on example sets taken from a broad range of different languages, to discuss different analyses, and to evaluate different theoretical proposals. Informationen für Studierende der Romanischen Sprachwissenschaft:
Die Veranstaltung entspricht für Studierende der Romanischen Sprachwissenschaft der obligatorischen Vorlesung (2 ECTS) für das Basismodul „Romanische Sprachwissenschaft“.
In diesem Fall muss die FlexNow-Lehrveranstaltungsanmeldung wie auch die FlexNow-Prüfungsanmeldung über den FlexNow-Zugang der Romanischen Sprachwissenschaft erfolgen.
- Inhalt:
- This course introduces the student to the skills and techniques necessary for the scientific analysis of language, and to some of the different theoretical approaches to linguistics currently available. The focus will be on the three traditional areas of language structure: sound patterns (phonetics and phonology), the structure of words (morphology), the structure of phrases and sentences (syntax). Students will have an opportunity to practice their skills in the seminar Introduction to Linguistics , which is offered parallel to this lecture. In addition, the lecture will give students a short overview of the world s languages, and an introduction to the resources available for studying them.

- Zusammen mit dem Folgekurs Kurdisch 2 bildet dieser Kurs ein Modul für den MA-Studiengang Iranistik: Sprachpraktisches Modul (Varietäten des Neupersischen/ Komplementärsprache, Ma Ir 05, Modulgröße 10 ECTS). Dieses Modul kann als Alternative zum Fachwissenschaftlichen Modul 2 des MA-Studienganges Iranistik gewählt werden. Der Kurs kann auch für die Modulgruppe "Sprachpraxis" im BA-Nebenfach "Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft", im MA "General Linguistics", im BA Islamischer Orient sowie fürs Studium Generale angerechnet werden.

- Inhalt:
- In this course we teach Northern Kurdish, also known as Kurmanji, which is spoken in a large region of Eastern Turkey and in the neighbouring regions of Syria, North Iraq and Iran. Estimates of the numbers of speakers range ferom 12 to 20 Million. There is now a rich selection of Kurdish-language media available as well as a number of pedagogical sources; in the course we will work with our own selection of material that will be made available to the students via the VC. The course is run by two instructors. The first is a native speaker of Northern Kurdish, from the Kurdish Region of North Iraq, who will work on developing communicative competence in Kurdish, while the other is a linguist who will explain and exemplify the relevant structures of Kurdish. The languages of instruction are Kurdish and English.
In diesem Kurs wird das Nordkurdische (auch Kurmanji genannt) unterrichtet, das in einem zusammenhängenden Gebiet im Osten der Türkei sowie angrenzenden Teilen Syriens, Nordiraks und Irans von mindestens 12 Millionen Sprechern gesprochen wird (einigen Schätzungen zu Folge liegt diese Zahl eher bei 20 Millionen). Inzwischen existiert ein großes Angebot an kurdischsprachigen Medien und Unterrichtsmaterialien. Für den Unterricht kombinieren wir diese in einer eigenen Auswahl, die den Studierenden auch über den VC zur Verfügung gestellt wird. Der Unterricht wird zum Teil durch eine Muttersprachlerin aus dem kurdischsprachigen Nordirak durchgeführt, die die aktive kommunikative Kompetenz der Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer fördert, zum Teil durch einen Linguisten, der die Strukturen des Kurdischen vermittelt. Unterrichtssprachen sind Englisch und Kurdisch.

- The colloquium is primarily aimed at graduate students (MA and PhD candidates) who are working on a thesis, or are developing their research questions. Students will be expected to present their work, and engage with the other participants and the lecturer in discussions of key concepts in method and theory. The first meeting will be on October 24th, when we will lay down the schedule for the term. Please contact the lecturer via email if you wish to attend, and give an indication of your research interests.
The colloquium is also open to interested linguists of all backgrounds who wish to participate in general exchange of ideas, and we may, depending on the programme, also be able to incorporate additional presentations; please check with the lecturer beforehand.

- Inhalt:
- This class addresses social, individual and political aspects of minority languages, their linguistic structures as well as the circumstances of language death. We will concentrate on three topic areas which represent major research topics related to minority languages and whose selection and depth of discussion is subject to the participant’s interest: (i) Language & Society, (ii) Language vitality & language endangerment, (iii) Multilingualism. Discussion will be based on examples from both European and Oriental languages, with a particular focus on the minority languages of Turkey.
Within the first block, we will examine the relation of language and power, i.e. language policies, and we aim to understand how language attitudes and linguistic identity work. Within the second block, we want to address the question: What actually makes a language vital? Within the third block, we focus on the grammatical structures and language acquisition of heritage languages - a hot issue in recent contact, acquisition and variational linguistic research.
The aim of this course is to get an overview of current research questions and theoretical approaches related to minority language issues. Participants will be enabled to identify and discuss research questions about the interplay of language and society.

- Inhalt:
- This course presents an overview of the linguistic context of today’s Middle East, and lays down the conceptual framework for analysing linguistic diversity in the region. The first part introduces the early history of the region, before introducing the three main language groups currently spoken there: Turkic, Semitic (presented by Prof. Lutz Edzard), and Iranian. The concept of ‘language family’ and ‘genetic relatedness’ will be exemplified using data from these languages, and contrasted with the concepts of ‘typological similarity’, and ‘areal convergence’.
We will also look at some of the lesser-known languages of the region, including Domari (Indo-Aryan) and Laz (Kartvelian), which do not belong to the three main groups.
The second part considers different empirical approaches to the linguistics of the Middle East, illustrated with selected case-studies:
- Language contact
- Language policy and language ideologies in emergent nation states
- Language documentation
- Variationist sociolinguistics
Students will be required to hold an oral presentation (20 mins.) on a topic to be selected in consultation with the instructor, and to submit a term paper.

- In this course we will explore the grammatical structure of Chirag Dargwa, a Nakh-Daghestanian language spoken in Daghestan (Caucasus, Russian Federation). We will look into the selected issues of phonology, morphology and syntax of Chirag and will spend some time analyzing texts in the language.
