- From its beginnings in the American pulp magazines (e.g. Black Mask) of the 1920s, hard-boiled writing has been part of the American literary tradition. In the rapidly changing America of that time (urbanization, Great Depression, Prohibition), the hard-boiled detective is characterized by his anti-authoritarian, individualistic code of behaviour. This course will discuss the classical hard-boiled detectives, epitomized by Sam Spade in Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon (1930) and Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe (The Big Sleep (1939)). Walter Mosley’s Devil in a Blue Dress (1990) with its black protagonist, Easy Rawlins, allows a view onto more recent hard-boiled writing, and the changes and transformations it has undergone. Taking into account the close interconnection between hard-boiled writing and Hollywood, the scope of this course will be broadened to include selected viewings from the film noir.
The above given core reading will be supplemented by further (shorter) texts throughout the course.
A 'Schein' requires regular attendance and participation, a presentation in class and a written paper of 10-12 pages (in English!) to be handed in by 21 September 2007.
