- According to drama critic S.E. Wilmer, American drama has often served as a public forum in which contested cultural notions and values, including notions of national identity, have been scrutinized, revised and reasserted. In this seminar we will discuss three contemporary plays which critically address issues that have been of significance in more recent public debates in the United States: August Wilson’s Fences (1985), David Mamet’s Oleanna (1992), and Tony Kushner’s Angels in America (1992). Fences focuses on the black urban experience in the pre-civil-rights-movement, pre-Vietnam-war decades of the 1950s and 60s. Oleanna explores key issues of the multi-faceted “political correctness” movement of the 1980s and 90s. And the two-part drama Angels in America investigates the social, political, and religious significance of AIDS, again of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
