Für Studienortwechsler, Erasmusstudenten sowie Studierende, die den Leistungsnachweis zur baldigen Prüfungsanmeldung benötigen, werden im begrenzten Umfang Plätze frei gehalten. Bei Überbuchung der Vorlesung fällt die Entscheidung über die Teilnahme in Rücksprache mit der Dozentin/dem Dozenten.

Please note that this course is not a substitute for Landeskunde GB I or Landeskunde GB II (see the Modulhandbücher for further information about which Landeskunde class(es) are required for your course of study).
- Inhalt
- This course will focus on the English-speaking countries of South and Southeast Asia and the Pacific. It has been said that the future of English depends on its status in Asia, and there are strong reasons underlying this claim: The largest (and growing) number of English speakers comes from Asia, the Indian subcontinent alone ranks third in the world (after the US and the UK), with the whole region of South Asia holding about a fifth of the world’s population.
We will take a look at the cultural, social and political history of these countries and the way contact with the English language and its speakers has had a mutual influence on both sides. And it won’t be all Bollywood, maximum economic efficiency, tropical flowers and pyjamas, bandanas and shampoo (all English words of Hindi origin)…
We will mainly cover the following regions and countries:
• South Asia: India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka
• Southeast Asia: Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines and Hong Kong
• South Pacific: Papua New Guinea and Fiji
More information on the requirements for credits in this course will be given in the first session.
