Zielgruppen außerhalb der Anglistik und Amerikanistik:
Hörer aller Fakultäten, die nicht Englisch studieren, aber ihr Englisch verbessern wollen, weil sie beispielsweise einen Auslandsaufenthalt planen oder überlegen, Fachunterricht (wie Geschichte) in englischer Sprache zu halten. Lehrer/innen, die eine Zusatzqualifikation im Fach Englisch anstreben und/oder Hinweise zur Verbesserung der englischen Aussprache und zu typischen Grammatikfehlern von deutschen Muttersprachlern erhalten wollen. Alle, die glauben, Sprachwissenschaft habe keinen Nutzen beim konkreten Spracherwerb, aber leise Zweifel an dieser Position zulassen.

Inhalt:

This lecture, which will be given in English (but not read from a script), will introduce the major contrasts between English and German. Particular emphasis will be placed on those contrasts that cause pronunciation problems for German learners of English. Practical hints will be given as to how one can (a) predict and diagnose pronunciation mistakes and (b) improve one's own English and also that of others like, for instance, students or friends.
Other important areas of grammar to be dealt with include:
relative clauses and the related questions of inserting commas in English; the tense and aspect systems of the two languages, for all those who have wondered about such questions as: Which future will/ shall/ am I going to use when and why and when will I be using the progressive?

The lecture will occasionally dive into the history of the English language, for this explains many modern irregularities in grammar and some of the seemingly illogical spellings and pronunciations (as in knight, sea, see, hour) or differences in the English spoken in England, Scotland and North America. Language history also reveals how fast English has changed in comparison with German. Additional light will be shed on discourse-pragmatic aspects that are connected with auxiliary verbs (e.g. will, would, must, have to, do) and politeness in language use in the two closely related languages and yet sometimes rather different linguistic cultures.
Professor Krug holds the Chair of English and Historical Linguistics at the University of Bamberg. His research interests centre around language variation and change, and he engages in research co-operations with the universities of Cambridge, Santiago de Compostela, Freiburg, Helsinki, Leuven, Malta, Santa Barbara and Zürich.

Inhalt:

This seminar is designed for advanced students. One aim is to provide a forum for the preparation and discussion of projects such as BA theses, Master’s theses, Staatsarbeiten and PhD projects. We will thus discuss empirical and methodological issues relevant to such studies. Secondly, there will be hands-on presentations of the new research facilities for English linguist(ic)s at Bamberg University, the focus being on the variety of newly acquired English text collections. A third goal is to discuss current trends in linguistics, which will involve discussion of recent and forthcoming publications as well as conference and book reports. Where appropriate, additional meetings with individual subgroups of the class will be offered.

Anzuschaffender Text: Script Krug. 2013ff. Introduction to Linguistics (wird in der ersten Sitzung zur Verfügung gestellt)

Anforderungen: Regelmäßige Lektüre, Bearbeitung von Übungsblättern, Teilnahme an Tutorat und Workshops, Abschlussklausur.

Inhalt:

This course is designed to introduce beginning students to the central terms and topics in current (English) linguistics. While the focus will be on present-day English, many modern irregularities (such as the differences between spelling and pronunciation or irregular verbs) can be explained in historical terms. We will therefore occasionally digress into the history of the English language in order to better understand the present. Topics to be dealt with include phonetics, phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax and sociolinguistics. One class will also be devoted to the major contrasts between English and German. In order to equip students with the basic analytical skills that are essential for future linguists and teachers alike, part of the course especially the accompanying tutorials and workshops will be practical in nature. We will therefore analyse authentic modern English texts from a linguistic point of view.
