Inhalt:

This seminar is designed for advanced students. One aim is to provide a forum for the preparation and discussion of projects such as BA theses, Master s theses, Staatsarbeiten and PhD projects. We will thus discuss empirical and methodological issues relevant to such studies. Secondly, there will be hands-on presentations of the new research facilities for English linguist(ic)s at Bamberg University, the focus being on the variety of newly acquired English text collections. A third goal is to discuss current trends in linguistics, which will involve discussion of recent and forthcoming publications as well as conference and book reports. Where appropriate, additional meetings with individual subgroups of the class will be offered.

The Role of Frequency in Linguistics

N.B.: In der zweiten Vorlesungswoche findet für Masterstudierende sowie für Lehramts- und Bachelorstudierende im Vertiefungsmodul Sprachwissenschaft (die nicht ohnehin die Übung "Methods and Theories in Linguistics" schon besucht haben) eine Einführung in wissenschaftliches Arbeiten im CIP-Pool U5/02.23 statt. Hierfür sind Studierende angehalten, sich folgende Termine freizuhalten: Mo, 19.10.2015, 8:15 - 9:45 Uhr ODER 10:15 - 11:45 Uhr ODER 12:15 - 13:45 Uhr UND Do, 22.10.2015, 8:15 - 13:45 Uhr ODER Fr, 23.10.2015, 8:15 - 13:45 Uhr. Zur Terminabstimmung, die in der ersten Semesterwoche stattfinden wird, tragen Sie sich bitte bis spätestens 15. Inhalt:

Frequency of use is an important factor in the description and development of languages. This seminar will explore its roles in such areas as the evolution of words (e.g. pronouns, neologisms, household vocabulary), grammar (e.g. irregular verbs and nouns; the evolution of modal verbs and inflections), discourse (e.g. turn-taking devices and other discourse markers) and phonology (e.g. weak forms and frequency-induced processes at word boundaries). While the focus of this seminar will be on the English language, principles will be sought that apply cross-linguistically. Therefore, Romance languages, German and typologically unrelated languages will be considered as well.
