Inhalt
In the English language spoken before around 1500, it was common to negate a simple clause using the particle not, as in go not! For today’s English speakers, however, this would sound very odd, because today, the same meaning is expressed using a negated form of do, as in: don’t go!
This is a simple example of syntactic change. The branch of linguistics that investigates syntactic change is diachronic, or historical, syntax. Diachronic syntax examines the ways in which the syntax of languages change over time, and develops models to account for them. In this course, we will review different kinds of syntactic change and some of the models that have been put forward to account for them, including grammaticalization, re-analysis, extension, and contact-induced change. We also discuss the issue of gradual versus abrupt change, and look at recent advances in corpus linguistics as a source of evidence in diachronic syntax. Examples will be taken from a variety of different languages and language families; students with an interest in a particular topic or language should contact the instructor prior to the beginning of term to discuss the possibility of including the topic in the programme.
