- Inhalt
- The seminar will talk about the representations of revolution in English literature. Although the focus will be on Tom Stoppard’s The Coast of Utopia Trilogy (2002). In these plays (Voyage, Shipwreck, and Salvage), Stoppard takes us to the long period before the October Revolution when philosophical debates between 1833 and 1866 paved the way to one of the most significant historical events in the twentieth century. The title is taken from Avrahm Yarmolinsky's Road to Revolution: A Century of Russian Radicalism (1959). The three plays premiered at the National Theatre in June and July 2002, directed by Trevor Nunn. At the centre of the three plays are the philosophical ides of the so called Russian intelligentsia personified by Michail Alexandrowitsch Bakunin (anarchist), Vissarion Grigoryevich Belinsky (Ronaricist literary critic), Ivan Turgenev (novelist), and Alexander Herzen (liberal social activist).
The trilogy will be discussed in the context of the concept of revolution in Great Britain since Edmund Burke’s Reflections upon the Revolution in France (1790) and Thomas Carlyle’s The French Revolution: A History (1837). We will also touch on nineteenth-century Russian literature and German philosophy (particularly Schelling, Fichte, Hegel and Marx).
The trilogy will be discussed along with two other Stoppard plays, Travesties (1974) and Rock ‘n’ Roll (2006) to situate it in his dramatic work.
