Inhalt
Description:

How does a medieval chicken soup taste like? Could the Anglo-Saxons have their names inscribed in runic letters on their tombstones? Did wīf ‘wife’ have neuter grammatical gender in Old English, like das Weib in German, and why? Could you turn down an invitation to battle if you were an Anglo-Saxon nobleman? Who has one eye, two ears and twelve hundred heads? Was it more expensive to damage a bishop or a king? What are the advantages of an ‘Alfred vessel’ over a Viking longboat?

These questions and many more will be answered in this seminar on Old English in its literary, cultural and historical context. The rich transmission of early medieval English vernacular texts in prose and verse will be the source of our explorations into specific aspects of Old English and the life of the Anglo-Saxons. We will focus on the late ninth and tenth centuries – the time when King Alfred had established law and peace in England and had instigated a reform in education and the writing of chronicles in English; when medical treatises told the people how to cure dim eyes and nausea; when the rules of monastic life were written down in the people’s mother tongue; when Ælfric composed his English school books; and when Christian poems alongside heroic verse, elegies and riddles were collected in poetic manuscripts, testifying to the proficient, indeed sometimes playful, use of the authors’ native tongue.

After a general introduction, the students are asked to prepare Old English text passages which address selected topics. Short presentations will accompany our discussions in class. The Old English language will be brought to life by our recitations of Old English verse, while detailed information on the historical background and “hands-on” experience of Anglo-Saxon daily life (cooking, clothing, jewellery, war-gear) will be part of the teaching, too, supported and guided by Hendrik Schober, B.A., Master student of Medieval History and experienced re-enactor of the Middle Ages, who will co-teach this class.

While no knowledge of earlier stages of the English language is required for successful participation in this course, students should bring along both interest in the history of English and exploratory spirit.
