Scheinanforderungen:

- Inhalt
- Pronunciation is the area of language learning where the influence of the native language is most prevalent a learner s foreign accent usually allows native speakers of English to identify his or her country of origin or mother tongue. Past research on German Learner English has identified several typical pronunciation features in this learner variety. Most studies have relied on auditory descriptions. While an auditory analysis is essential in second language (L2) pronunciation research, it is affected by a certain degree of subjectivity. A more objective approach is the investigation of the acoustic properties of speech. Freely available and easy-to-use speech analysis software makes it possible to carry out instrumental analyses of recordings and identify differences between learners and native speakers. Acoustic measurements allow us to quantify and visualize deviations from the target language.
In this seminar, we will investigate foreign-accented English in theory and practice. After an exploration of the theoretical background of L2 phonological acquisition, we will use speech analysis software to explore acoustic properties of non-native speech. In our analysis we will compare three groups of speakers: (i) native speakers of British English, (ii) German learners at school, (iii) German learners at university. You will also have the chance to record and analyze your own pronunciation and see how you compare with native speakers and whether typical properties of German Learner English surface in your speech. In the acoustic analysis we will deal with individual segments, such as the quality of vowels or the voicing of consonants, and larger units of the speech stream, e.g. rhythmic properties, fluency, and intonation.
