Für Studienortwechsler, Erasmusstudenten sowie Studierende, die den Leistungsnachweis zur baldigen Prüfungsanmeldung benötigen, werden im begrenzten Umfang Plätze freigehalten. Bei Überbuchung des Seminars fällt die Entscheidung über die Teilnahme in Rücksprache mit dem Dozenten.
Anforderungen für Leistungsnachweise:
2 ECTS: Kurzreferat
4 ECTS: Kurzreferat + Verschriftlichung
6 ECTS: Kurzreferat + Hausarbeit
8 ECTS: Nur nach Absprache mit dem Dozenten!
Modulanbindungen
Diese Lehrveranstaltung ist für alle Studiengänge der englischen Sprachwissenschaft (Lehramt, BA, MA usw.) geeignet, in denen 2, 4 oder 6 ECTS erforderlich sind.
Prerequisites:
Participants must have passed the Introduction to English Linguistics; ideally, participants will have passed English Phonetics and Phonology as well.
- Inhalt
- This seminar is a general introduction to Scots, a West Germanic language that developed out of the Anglian branch of Old English and was the most important medium of communication in large parts of Scotland during much of the late Middle Ages and the Early Modern age. Scots still plays an important role in the linguistic landscape of present-day Scotland, but there is disagreement whether it should still be regarded as a language or rather as a dialect of English. Thus, one of the central points of interest in this seminar is the issue of language status. This question is approached by tracing the history of Scots, describing its linguistic features at all levels, looking at relevant language attitudes and policies, and discussing some current sociolinguistic research. There is a lively internet community and a number of very useful websites that promote Scots or discuss current affairs in Scots, and during the seminar we will visit some of them to see Scots in action.
