- Inhalt
- Description:
This lecture sheds analytical light on "that vast aggregate of words and phrases which constitutes the Vocabulary of English-speaking men" (quoted from the chapter "General Explanations" of the Oxford English Dictionary, first edition). It provides an overview of topics and discussions related to the English lexicon. Casting our net wide, we will consider approaches to defining the notion(s) of 'word' (and 'phraseological unit'), describing the meaning of these units, and structuring the vocabulary. Furthermore, the analysis of morphological, phraseological and semantic complexity as seen in the words and phrases blackboard, dehydration, and to sleep like a log, for example, will be discussed and also both paradigmatic and syntagmatic relations between words, such as synonyms and collocations. Furthermore, we will also look at theories of the organisation of the mental lexicon (how do we find the words we want to understand or say?) and also methods and achievements of registering the host of lexemes (and phraseological units) in printed and electronic dictionaries of English.
