The novel – with its formal elasticity, its capacity to include every literary register in a single work, and its tolerance of life’s gritty realities – is the 19th century’s most characteristic literary art form, and its rise brought with it the danger that poetry would find itself sidelined, reduced to the merely lyrical, occasional and personal. But two poets, Alfred Tennyson and Robert Browning, rivaled the greatest novelists of their time with poems – sometimes brief as a lover’s note, sometimes long as an epic – on every conceivable subject: Classical mythology, medieval romance, rural traditions, industrial technology, the plight of the urban poor, the adventures of empire, episodes from European history – and this with a keen ear for the music of words and a discriminating sensitivity to metrical forms. Works to be included in the course would be: Tennyson ‘Ulysses’, ‘The Lady of Shalott’, ‘The Charge of the Light Brigade’, ‘Maud’, and selections from ‘The Idylls of the King’ and ‘In Memoriam’; Browning ‘My Last Duchess’, ‘Rabbi Ben Ezra’, ‘A Toccata of Galuppi’s’, ‘Up at a Villa, Down in the City’, ‘Love Among the Ruins’, and selections from ‘The Ring and the Book’.
