Margaret Thatcher s term as British Prime Minister lasted from 1979 to 1990. It is now widely regarded as one of the most divisive and transformative periods of modern British history. Her time in office, however, not only registered in a socio-political sphere narrowly understood, but also provoked significant reactions within popular music. These responses ranged from songs directly attacking the Prime Minister (e.g. The Beat s Stand Down Margaret ) to those addressing the events and politics of Thatcherism (e.g. Elvis Costello s Shipbuilding and The Jam s That s Entertainment ), from the adoption of particular aesthetic stances (aestheticism, Englishness and experiment within groups such as the The Smiths, Joy Division, and Gang of Four) to the outright political campaigning of individual artists (Billy Bragg and Paul Weller touring in support of Labour s 1987 general election campaign). While many artists thus thrived on a sense of opposition, the hedonism and escapism of other pop acts (e.g. Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Culture Club) is to be more straightforwardly related to the materialism and individualism prevalent at the time.

The course aims to address and classify all these reactions, and will also examine some of the more recent interactions between Margaret Thatcher, politics, and popular music, e.g. the avowedly anti-Thatcherite attitude of 1990s Britpop music, the alternative music preferences of the Cameron government, and the song Ding-Dong! The Witch Is Dead reaching No. 2 in the UK singles charts following the former Prime Minister s demise in April 2013.

All topics will be contextualised within the wider political and cultural background of their time. For this purpose, we will not only consider academic and first-hand accounts of the relevant periods, but also read Jim Cartwright s working-class drama Road (1986), Caryl Churchill s 1987 play about the banking world, Serious Money, and Margaret Drabble s panoramic novel, The Radiant Way (1987). Additionally, there are going to be screenings of Stephen Daldry s Billy Elliot (2000), a film set against the backdrop of the 1984/1985 miner s strike, and of the dark romantic comedy Brassed Off (Mark Herman, 1996), in which the story of industrial decline is continued into the 1990s.

Lernergebnisse, Kompetenzen/Learning outcomes, Skills
Students are to gain an overview and understanding of 1980s British politics and culture through the provision of background material and the discussion of both literature and individual manifestations of popular culture. Participants will learn how to analyse these works and place them in their appropriate social and artistic context. Since neither Thatcherism nor its relation to popular music ended with the resignation of the Iron Lady , the course also aims to foster an exemplary understanding of its continuing relevance within British culture.
