Inhalt:

It almost goes without saying that such a vast subject as “Religion in American Life” cannot be covered comprehensively in one university course. This seminar adopts a two-pronged approach: on the one hand, it attempts to provide an overview of the main directions and debates in American religious life, among them “the relationship between Church and State”, “Fundamentalism vs. Modernism”, “Mainline Protestantism vs. Evangelicalism”, “religion and race” and “religion and the media”. On the other, it will highlight a few specific texts, people, and movements that have left an indelible mark on American religious culture, e.g. essays from The Fundamentals, Billy Graham’s sermons, and Martin Luther King Jr.’s last speech “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop”; Calvary Chapel pastor Chuck Smith, flamboyant televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker, and Waco cult “prophet” David Koresh; The Social Gospel, The Nation of Islam, and the Promise Keepers. While most of the seminar will be concerned with the 20^th and 21^st centuries, the first sessions will provide some background information on the colonial period, as well as the 18^th and 19^th centuries. Religious traditions outside Christianity will be addressed only briefly. Those who want to gain some more insights about the history of Judaism in the US may be referred to the lecture course “Jewish-American Literature and Culture” (Tuesday, 12-14).

Inhalt:

This course offers an introduction to key themes and methods in American cultural studies as an interdisciplinary field of inquiry. Thematically, we will explore issues such as religion and immigration, the frontier and regionalism, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, the media and technology, America as nature’s nation and America and the world; conceptually, the focus will be on equality and difference as utopian ideas that have shaped American culture from colonial times to the present.

The course is designed to provide you with basic skills in American cultural studies, with a strong emphasis on reading and discussing various kinds of texts in their cultural contexts. Our primary materials will include short stories, poems and excerpts from novels as well as historical documents, essays, political speeches, photographs, popular songs and films, while several theoretical essays will provide us with a language for discussing changing concepts of culture.

Inhalt:

This lecture surveys the literature and culture of the Jewish community in America from colonial times to the present. After critically examining the terms Jewish, Jewish literature and Jewish culture, the lecture provides a historical overview of the major phases of Jewish immigration to America. We will then study landmarks of Jewish-American literature in their respective cultural contexts. A particular focus will be on novels and short stories that deal with characteristic Jewish experiences of the last 120 years. Whether they concentrate on the problems of adapting to new physical, social and cultural surroundings in the wake of immigration, lament the disintegration of familial and religious securities, or reflect upon the horrors of persecution and annihilation, most of these works negotiate the meaning of Jewish identity in modern times. Further social and cultural issues addressed in the lecture include the branches of Judaism in America, Jewish politics and organizations, music and arts, the media and popular culture, anti-Semitism, the Holocaust, and Israel.
