- Inhalt
The course provides a comprehensive overview of Ottoman architecture from the period of the formation of the Ottoman Empire until the 18th century. It comprises of examinations of major architectural structures and their architectural revetments, located in the Ottoman capitals Bursa, Edirne and above all in Istanbul. The course dedicates considerable attention to Sinan, the Michelangelo of the East, his life and his architectural creations. Ottoman architecture is discussed together with the history of the Ottoman Empire. Examination of these structures comprises scrutiny and discussion of information about their construction, patrons, political climate in which they were build, artistic techniques for the production of their revetments, their builders and the relation to the contemporary architectural structures. Attention is also given to Ottoman architecture of the Empire’s provinces. Research methodology and approaches to the subject are discussed throughout the course.
This course is going to be thought in English. Students should feel free to communicate and sustain their exams in English or German, according to their preferences.
