Inhalt
This course is an introduction to the linguistic diversity of the world. More than 6000 languages spoken in the world nowadays demonstrate considerable variation in terms of their sounds, words, and grammar. Going through different linguistic families and geographical areas, we will examine how languages around the globe differ in their structure and will become familiar with major typological parameters of cross-linguistic variation. Looking at selected grammatical phenomena, we will see that this cross-linguistic variation is not as unlimited as it may seem in the first place. One more side of the world’s linguistic diversity concerns differences in social functions and styles. We will learn about a variety of phenomena related to how language functions in society, such contact languages, avoidance registers, and genderlects. We will also address more general questions about historical and areal relationships among languages, language shift, linguistic evidence about human prehistory, and linguistic relativity.
