- im Aufbaumodul 1 (6 ECTS) gilt eine benotete schriftliche Hausarbeit (mind. 10 Seiten) als Leistungsnachweis
- im Vertiefungsmodul (8 ECTS) gilt eine benotete schriftliche Hausarbeit (mind. 14 Seiten) als Leistungsnachweis
- im Profilmodul (2 ECTS) gilt eine benotete schriftliche Hausarbeit (mind. 6 Seiten) als Leistungsnachweis
- Inhalt
- In this course, we will concentrate on different aspects around the topic of language and migration.
We will ask what migration in terms of language means for (i) society, (ii) the individual, and also (iii) for the respective languages.
We will have a look at societal implications of migration such as multilingual societies, language policies, and especially urban superdiversity. Different concepts of space will be one of the commons themes of this course.
With regard to the impacts of migration on the individual level, we will talk about both the individual linguistic outcomes of migration, i.e. bilingualism and second language acquisition, as well es about social implications on social networks and language identity of speakers.
Finally, with regard to the impact of migration on the languages themselves, we will look first at special instances of language uses of e.g. minority languages or heritage languages and consider aspects of language endangerment or rather language maintenance. Second, we will also shed light on the structural outcomes of migration, namely language contact.
An areal focus will be provided on languages of the Middle East and Europe.
Course objectives
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
-name and explain core theoretical concepts from the topics of bi-/multilingualism, minority languages, language ecology
-describe interrelations between different thematic aspects such as minority languages and language endangerment
-employ at least two concepts discussed in the course on recent societal questions related to migration
-analyse a language biography following (socio-)linguistic criteria
-present and, to some extent, critically discuss an independently developed research question based on the course content
-write a technically correct term paper fulfilling the criteria of academic writing in linguistics
Course requirements
-presentation (15-30min)
-term paper based on the presentation (6-14 pages, according to credits)
Please note! The course will be organized in three block sessions (instead of the Tuesday sessions). The dates will be fixed at the first meeting.
The first session takes place regularly on Tue, 23.04.2019, 18:15-19:45.
