Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches
This seminar is held in English language and collaborates with the seminar "Music meets visual arts". Together, we will visit an exhibition and a concert.

Inhalt
Psychological aesthetics is a thrilling and recently growing field of research. Still, many questions about perceptual pleasure are yet open. This seminar provides an overview on current research and theoretical accounts. We will focus on questions like: (why) do we appreciate artworks that are ambiguous, indeterminate or otherwise difficult to process? Don't we prefer objects that we can handle and understand easily? Is there a similarity between the pleasurable Aha-insight experience when solving a riddle and the pleasure of finding meaningful patterns in an artwork?
The students of this course will give short presentations (20min) on research findings from the field of psychological aesthetics regarding the domain of visual arts to the group as well as to the collaborating seminar "Music meets visual arts". In reciprocity, they are presented research findings from the domain of music perception by the collaborating seminar's students. Together we will discuss differences between visual arts and music in regard to perceptual, affective, and cognitive effects. Finally, we will collect self reports by visiting an exhibition as well as a concert to explore some of these effects.
