- Inhalt
- This course focuses on the geography and history of the U.S. day as figured in American cinema from the first European settlements through the present day. In addition to presenting this information, the course provides students with the opportunity to sharpen their listening and comprehension skills.
This course, Film and the American Landscape, aims to refresh your knowledge of geography from the winter semester through the (literal) lens of historically and culturally important motion pictures. This course will explore how representations of various geographic spaces in American film impact our understanding of community, identity, and place. Any given geographical space can hold diverse meanings for various groups of people, and how such is represented in film is often fused with issues of power, stereotype, and the construction of the Self and Other.
Students will watch and analyze a variety of narrative, documentary, indie (independent), and major studio films to understand how America’s rural, urban, and suburban spaces are represented in cinematic art. Issues to consider: How do these films reflect, contradict, influence or even challenge lived experiences in these spaces? Can film provide us “access” to spaces we ourselves might never physically enter?
