Inhalt
Yehuda Halevy, one of the foremost thinkers of the Middle Ages, has had a defining imprint on Jewish thought and culture ever since his works of poetry and theology were disseminated. Often termed the "Jewish Ghazali," Halevy is widely known to have borrowed from the traditions of Jewish and Islamic mysticism, along with rationalistically inclined speculative theology, to challenge the heavily Neo-Platonist and Aristotelian philosophic rationalism of thinkers such as Maimonides and Saadia. Yet recent scholarship in intellectual history has uncovered another major formative influence on Halevy's thought, namely the Shiite theology transmitted by Ismaeli missionaries from the Fatamid empire. This theology, with its core concept of the Imamate, had significant impact on Halevy's thought, and most specifically his depictions of religious and political authority in his magnum opus The Kuzari. This seminar's primary aim is to provide students with the conceptual background and interpretive tools for a hermeneutic close reading of the Kuzari in translation with special attention to questions of authority, both political and religious. The first half of the course will offer an introduction to those concepts in Jewish and Shiite theology that undergird the Kuzari such as Jewish Chosenness, the Land of Israel, Immamate, and Wilaya, while also placing Halevy and his text in their historical context. The second half of the course will consist of a close reading of the Kuzari together with modern scholarship that attempts to interpret and at times appropriate Halevy's religiopolitical thought. An 'Übung' will accompany the course in a parallel fashion and consist of original Arabic language readings for those with appropriate linguistic proficiency.
