Aktuelle Befunde der Migrations- und Integrationsforschung: Socio-cultural integration of Muslims

Dozent/in:
Anna Berthold
Angaben:
Seminar, 3,00 SWS
Termine:
Do, 10:00 - 13:00, F21/03.81
Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
The seminar will place particular emphasis on empirical research articles; therefore, a profound basic knowledge of quantitative/statistical research methods is essential for attendance. The language of instruction will optionally be English or German, in order to facilitate international students’ course attendance. The examination consists of a short presentation (20 %), discussion questions (20 %) and the submission of a seminar paper (60 %). The registration to the seminar and the examination via FlexNow is necessary for the acquisition of a certificate.
Examination is possible for the following modules:
  • Fortgeschrittene Themen der Migration und Integration
  • Fortgeschrittene Themen der Sozialstrukturanalyse
  • Ethnische Ungleichheit
  • Aktuelle Befunde der Migrations- und Integrationsforschung
  • Fortgeschrittene Themen der Migrationssoziologie
  • Bildungssoziologie: Migration und Bildung
Inhalt:
Questions and concerns about the “integrability” of Islam and Muslims in Germany and Western Europe dominate public and politic debates about migration and integration, terrorism and (right-wing) populism. At the center: prejudices, doubts, fears and hostility towards Muslims, mostly justified with perceived discrepancies in religion and culture. The seminar deals with the question to what degree Muslims in Germany and Europe are actually integrated. Instead of taking a structural perspective on integration (in for example education and work), the seminar focuses solely on socio-cultural factors like religion, values, attitudes, identity, language – culture in the broadest sense. To what degree do Muslims acculturate in their values, attitudes, religion and their ethnic and religious identity? We will read some introductory texts dealing with the question if and why Muslim integration should be different in comparison to other migrant groups. In the second part of the seminar, we will read some empirical research results about values and attitudes, religion, identity and further integration dimensions of Muslim immigrants in Western Europe.

Ethnische Ungleichheit: Ethnic educational inequalities: The case of special education

Dozent/in:
Miriam Schmaus
Angaben:
Seminar, 3,00 SWS
Termine:
Fr, 14:00 - 17:00, F21/03.03
Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
  • 6 (or 12) ECTS (or matching qualifications for students of other disciplines)
  • Credit is awarded for one presentation + four short Essays (Portfolio).

Credit can be transferred into the following modules:

  • Fortgeschrittene Themen der Sozialstrukturanalyse
  • Ethnische Ungleichheit
  • Aktuelle Befunde der Migrations- und Integrationsforschung
  • Fortgeschrittene Themen der Migrationssoziologie
  • Bildungssoziologie

NOTE: The language of instruction will optionally be English or German, in order to facilitate inter-national students to attend the course. However, a (small) number of relevant studies are solely available in German. German language knowledge may thus be of advantage.

ATTENTION: Class starts on 26.10.2018 (one week after the official start of the semester).
Inhalt:
Sociological research often examines the educational success of children whose development is typical for their age-group. However, a notable share of students in most countries lags behind their peers in their cognitive, social or communicative development. Often to such an extent that it calls for special provisions. Such special educational needs have far-reaching consequences for the children in question, as well as for schools and policy-makers that aim to provide appropriate forms of education and training.
This class introduces into the topic of special education and gives on overview of the relevant constructs and debates. In particular, we will deal with two main questions. Firstly, we will examine whether children of certain social groups are more likely to have special educational needs than children of others and why this should be the case. We will also examine why certain authors suggest that the identification of special educational needs is unjustified for some of these groups. Secondly, we will examine which type of schooling should be most beneficial for educational achievement and educational motivation when children are identified with special educational needs. We will critically review all applied arguments and methods used to assess these arguments.

Fortgeschrittene Themen der Bevölkerungswissenschaft: Research Methods in Demography

Dozent/in:
Zafer Büyükkececi
Angaben:
Seminar, 2,00 SWS, Bitte über FlexNow und VC anmelden. Das Seminar findet auf Englisch statt!
Termine:
Di, 14:00 - 16:00, RZ/00.06
Inhalt:
This course deals with core concepts, measures and models that demographers use to understand population dynamics including general methods such as standardization and smoothing. Specifically, the course deals with techniques designed for the analysis of fertility, nuptiality, and mortality. Students will employ these techniques with Stata and learn data management. Some approaches that will be discussed during the course are (i) understanding the determinants of population growth, (ii) estimating mortality and fertility rates using indirect techniques, and (iii) examining the influence of unobserved heterogeneity on health and mortality. The course aims to familiarize students with tools and concepts that have been broadly used by demographers. Furthermore, the students will learn how to apply demographic methods using Stata software.

Fortgeschrittene Themen Familie: Gender culture and gender ideologies

Dozent/in:
Gundula Zoch
Angaben:
Seminar, 2,00 SWS, ECTS: 6
Termine:
14:15 - 17:45, FMA/00.07
ab 24.10.2018 alle 2 Wochen
Vorbesprechung: Mittwoch, 17.10.2018, 14:15 - 17:45 Uhr, FMA/00.07
Inhalt:
In West Germany, 38 % of respondents agree, that a preschool child is likely to suffer if his or her mother works. (ISSP, 2012). In contrast, only 18 % of East Germans agree with the statement, while even less people in Sweden do (15 %). Where do these differences in gender role attitudes come from? Do gender ideologies differ between men and women, older and younger cohorts or respondents with different educational attainment or migration background? The seminar offers an introduction to the research on gender ideologies and gender role attitudes. In the seminar we will, firstly, look at different theoretical and empirical explanations of differences in gender culture and gender ideologies between different welfare states or social groups. Secondly, we will discuss whether life-course events and state interventions are associated with ideology changes over the life-course. Throughout the course, we will use theoretical core readings as well as empirical research papers applying both cross-sectional and longitudinal research designs. Therefore, prior knowledge of statistics up to the level of ordinary least squares regression (OLS) is assumed.
