- Research exploring the effect of perceptions (such leader or follower perceptions) on individual outcomes is largely based on analytical techniques that do not allow drawing conclusions regarding causality - such as OLS analysis or classic SEM. Awareness for this problem is increasing and leading journals start viewing such studies more skeptically. In this workshop we will discuss why it is methodologically so challenging to estimate the causal effect of perceptions and why even experimental approaches are limited in this case. In particular, we will see how omitted variables threaten the exogeneity of perceptions as explanatory variables and thus the accuracy of their estimated coefficient. We will explore different empirical remedies and study one of them in more depth: the experimental instrumental variable (IV) approach. To give you a feeling of how this can be employed in practice we will then go to R to try it out. So please bring your laptops along.
