- Inhalt
- Selective migration and integration processes
While many explanations have been offered to explain ethnic differences among the second generation, the impact of the pre-migration status of the first generation has generally been neglected. Overlooking immigrant selectivity how immigrants characteristics compare to those remaining in the country of origin limits the current literature s understanding of the observed patterns of assimilation or socioeconomic mobility (Feliciano 2005: 3).
In this seminar, the following topics will be covered:
- What is selective migration?
- How do those who came compare to those left behind? Educational selectivity in U.S. immigration
- When to expect positive and when to expect negative selection
- Consequences of educational selectivity: Educational attainment of the second generation I
- Consequences of educational selectivity: Educational attainment of the second generation II
- Consequences of educational selectivity: Language acquisition in the first generation
- Measuring selectivity I
- Measuring selectivity II
- Health selectivity
- Motivational selectivity
- How do those who came compare to those who stayed behind? Educational selectivity in European immigration

- Erwartete Teilnehmerzahl: 20
