Inhalt:

To read Shakespeare in the original usually presents many linguistic problems for German students, even if they otherwise have a very good command of present-day English. The seminar will give an introduction to the language of Shakespeare and analyse it from a linguistic point of view. We will deal with the different linguistic levels (phonetics/phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, vocabulary) to highlight characteristic features of Shakespeare's English and how it differs from contemporary Standard English. Moreover, we will study the wider historical context of Shakespeare's English. The Early Modern English period (1500-1800) marks an important stage in the history of the English language, especially as far as the development of the standard is concerned. Participants in the seminar will be asked to prepare individual topics and present them in class.

Inhalt:

In the relatively confined space of Scotland, mainly three linguistic traditions co-exist, interact, and influence each other (or have done so in the past). The oldest of these is Scottish Gaelic, once the language of the kings of Scotland but no longer widely spoken today. It is still important as an emblem of (western) Scottish identity, however, and its influence can be traced in the variety of English spoken in the Highlands. The second linguistic tradition is Scots, which developed out of a northern branch of Old English. Today, Scots can be said to function as a non-standard dialect of English with unique characteristics at the levels of phonology, morphosyntax, and the lexicon. Finally, there is Scottish Standard English (SSE). It is often described as Standard English spoken with a Scottish accent, but there are also grammatical features characteristic of SSE. This seminar provides the following:

• A general understanding of Scottish topography and history and the ways in which they shaped the linguistic landscape over the centuries, resulting in the present-day situation
• Discussions of the two problematic notions of language and dialect as exemplified in the changing roles of English and Scots in Scotland
• An understanding of the most important characteristics of Scottish English / Scots in pronunciation, grammar and lexicon, and the ability to identify and describe them
• Discussions of some influential empirical studies into (mainly urban) varieties of English in present-day Scotland
• Examples of Scots/SSE in popular culture, film and literature.

Inhalt:

This course treats American English, arguably the variety with the strongest impact within the complexities of English, as a pluricentric language in today's world. More specifically, we will consider its emergence and unique colonial history, its structural properties (phonology, morphosyntax, semantics, vocabulary, etc.), and its internal variability (e.g. regional and social variation).

As we go along, we will also discuss phenomena such as collquialization and linguistic Americanization, and will focus on language contact between American English and other languages. Further issues covered include its influence on other varieties of (postcolonial) English, attitudes toward American English and associated developments of globalization (cf. the term "Coca-Colonization") and its allegedly dominating role in worldwide media and pop culture discourse (e.g. hip-hop language and its relation to African-American English).

Inhalt:

Journalistic media are an everyday resource, providing information about events outside of our immediate horizon of experience. Hence journalism is regarded as the most important textual system of modernity.
This course approaches journalism from a combined (media studies/linguistics) perspective to explore what exactly the features of this textual system are. Throughout the semester we will contrast the compositional structure of different journalistic genres (e.g. news, feature, interview, and commentary), and discuss how their communicative modes differ depending on the publishing context. We will illustrate how journalistic language differs between various newspapers (e.g. the THE GUARDIAN or THE SUN), and how communication is shaped by technological variables, comparing print to broadcast or online journalism.
In order to explore these aspects hands-on, this course will familiarize students with qualitative and quantitative methods of analysis (such as (critical) discourse analysis and register analysis), and will introduce them to relevant broader concepts (such as audience design, multimodality, and general principles and features of written and spoken communication).

This course will gently introduce you to the key concepts of and methods in corpus linguistics and how corpora can be used in a range of linguistic disciplines. At its core, corpus linguistics refers to the analysis of authentic language material using computers. So (almost) regardless of which flavour of linguistics you’re into (sociolinguistics, lexicography, gender studies, World Englishes, etc.), you can use a corpus linguistic approach to investigate the linguistic phenomenon you're interested in. The course is designed for beginners so that no special (IT) knowledge is required.

This seminar is designed for advanced students. One aim is to provide a forum for the preparation and discussion of projects such as BA theses, Master’s theses, Staatsarbeiten and PhD projects. We will thus discuss empirical and methodological issues relevant to such studies. Secondly, there will be hands-on presentations of the new research facilities for English linguist(ic)s at Bamberg University, the focus being on the variety of newly acquired English text collections. A third goal is to discuss current trends in linguistics, which will involve discussion of recent and forthcoming publications as well as conference and book reports. Where appropriate, additional meetings with individual subgroups of the class will be offered.

How can we describe this kind of lexical fixation, for instance, in idioms such as to sleep like a log, Happy Birthday!, in next to no time, of course, face to face and A friend in need is a friend indeed? And how can we account for idioms with lexical variation and those which are not syntactically well-formed, both of which can be demonstrated by the idiom to trip/dance/tread the light fantastic? And in how far do fixed syntactic patterns which are lexically free, as for instance noun-preposition-noun constructions such as grandfather after grandfather (entered the room), differ from idioms? In which way does this 'fixation' influence our language use (both productive and receptive), and also language development? Which role does frequency of use play in these matters? What is the importance of this topic for teaching English as a foreign language? In order to approach first answers to a selection of these questions we will explore fixation in language on the basis of current studies on idioms (and phraseology in general) as well as on constructions. Among topics that we will discuss are:

• the functional and stylistic potential of idioms

'Fixed' expressions, idioms, formulaic language, patterns, constructions: how much of the language that we use is 'new', how much is 'pre-fabricated', that is, governed by 'fixation' in one way or another? 4. Vorbemerkung:
Dieses fächerübergreifende Seminar findet teils in deutscher, teils in englischer Sprache statt.

Inhalt:

Englisch und Deutsch sind durch vergleichbare Grammatikalisierungen geprägt, d.h. viele grammatische Morpheme sind auf ähnliche Weise entstanden: Im verbalen Bereich ähneln sich in beiden Sprachen beispielsweise die Grammatikalisierungspfade für das Dentalsuffix (engl. laugh-ed und dt. lach-te) oder die Perfektformen (engl. have laugh-ed und dt. haben gelacht), wobei auch diese vergleichbaren Prozesse bei fortschreitender Grammatikalisierung unterschiedlich verliefen: So fand im Deutschen ein funktionaler Wandel vom Perfekt zum Tempus statt (jedoch mit zwei Auxiliaren), während sich im Englischen das Perfektauxiliar have durchgesetzt hat. Das englische und das deutsche Futur haben hingegen unterschiedliche Spenderlexeme (vgl. will und werden). Noch deutlicher ist der Unterschied zwischen dem voll grammatikalisierten Progressiv im Englischen und dem schwach grammatikalisierten am-Progressiv im Deutschen, wo sich sowohl der Grammatikalisierungspfad als auch der Grammatikalisierungsgrad unterscheiden. In diesem Seminar werden diese und weitere ältere und jüngere Grammatikalisierungen, z.B. von Modalverben, Subjunktionen und Präpositionen vergleichend analysiert. Dabei werden die in der Forschung vorgeschlagenen theoretischen Grammatikalisierungsmodelle diskutiert und aus der kontrastiven Perspektive empirisch überprüft.

In this seminar we will explore language-related Internet resources that are commonly used by both native and non-native speakers aiming to check the correctness and improve the quality of their (written) English. These include resources such as:

• online versions of published monolingual dictionaries
• online versions of published bilingual dictionaries
• collaborative monolingual dictionaries
• collaborative multilingual dictionaries
• collocation dictionaries
• multi-purpose lexical databases
• online machine translation tools
• corpus platforms for teachers and pupils
• materials for English language teaching
• tools for academic writing

Work in the seminar will catalogue resources already known to students and compile an inventory of further comparable websites. In a second step, we will jointly develop evaluation criteria for different types of resources. Students’ contributions will be devoted to systematically exploring and discussing the functionalities and limitations of the resources, the data they are based on and their technical background. In particular, we will investigate how well they reflect actual language usage as represented in linguistic corpora (which we will explore through professional platforms such as sketchengine.eu, corpus.byu.edu and cqpweb.lancs.ac.uk). Termpapers will focus on two or more web resources of the same kind, compare their strengths and weaknesses and assess their quality from the point of view of descriptive linguistics. Students will not only become familiar with a variety of potentially useful websites, but they will also acquire a well-informed, critical approach to language-related web resources.

This course is divided into two parts. The first part will be conducted in a traditional class format for the first three weeks; it focuses on

• a basic introduction to the software environment R (and RStudio) and its programming language.
• learning about basic issues and concepts in R (How to load data? What are objects, functions and arguments? How do we transform and manipulate data in R?)
• learning about different kinds of variables and their characteristics in R (numerical and character vectors, factors)
• learning about basic plot types.

The second part of the course, running for another three weeks but possibly extended beyond the six week period, will be conducted in small groups, or as sittings with individual participants, who will be asked to bring their own data and problems, and who will thus have a say in what direction this part of the class takes. Data that we will look at could include

• completed work that has been analysed and visualized without using R (e.g. in Excel), in which case routines in Excel and R can be directly compared,
• final theses or termpapers with a quantitative orientation, or simply
• further exercises based on data.

The class assumes no prior knowledge of participants concerning the use of R.

• an introduction to linguistically relevant acoustic parameters (pitch, intensity, spectral properties, duration)
• the computer program Praat and its basic functionality

• analyse recordings made (or downloaded) by the participants,
• focus on specific issues (e.g. the acoustic analysis of vowel, stress patters, intonation)

General Information for students of WIAI:
This seminar is taking place in conjunction with the 6 ECTS module GdI-CSNL-M. Seminar students should expect to give a presentation, which may be a group presentation, on a topic in the second half of the course.
Seminar students (3 ECTS) will be expected to attend about half of the sessions (essentially the first half of the semester) and to give a presentation in the second half of the semester.
Seminar students are expected to read suggested readings on the topic of their choice, and reading lists will be supplied. Seminar students will produce an essay on a question relating to their topic. Seminar students should inform the lecturer of the topic they wish to present on as soon as they can, but it would be good to have the information by 5 or 6 weeks after the week starting the 29th of April.
This course will be taught in English, and all course materials (such as lecture notes) as well as the assessment will be in English.

The course consists of two parts, both of which are obligatory: Four hours on Monday (dealing with academic writing in linguistics) and four hours either on Thursday or on Friday (dealing with empirical data in linguistics), with a little project work in between. Description:
The Übung Methods and Theories in Linguistics accompanies the linguistic seminar in the Ergänzungsmodul Sprachwissenschaft. It complements the theoretical and methodological insights and skills in this area. The Übung will introduce and put to work techniques and approaches characteristic of English Linguistics and thereby help students to acquire competence in using specific sources of information and technologies as well as in collecting, analysing and visualizing their own empirical data. The topics treated will include aspects of academic writing (handling secondary literature, referencing), the analysis of linguistic corpora and other databases, the use of online dictionaries, the construction of questionnaires, the analysis of audio-recorded data, the interpretation of experiments, etc.

4. Unterrichtssprache:

Inhalt:

Innerhalb von nicht mehr als 40 bis 50 Generationen, die zwischen der Herrschaft von König Alfred und der Gegenwart liegen, hat sich das Englische so stark verändert, dass es beim Vergleich eines altenglischen mit einem neuenglischen Text gleichen Inhalts kaum mehr als dieselbe Sprache zu erkennen ist. Viele Bereiche des Sprachsystems waren extremen Veränderungsprozessen unterworfen. Diese Tatsache und die relativ zahlreich erhaltenen Zeugnisse früherer Sprachzustände, z.B. verschiedene Bibelübersetzungen, machen das Englische zu einem lohnenden Forschungsgegenstand für die historische Linguistik. Das Seminar bietet einen Überblick über die Entwicklung der englischen Sprache vom Altenglischen bis heute. Neben grundlegenden Aspekten der historischen Linguistik werden Kontinuität und Wandel vor allem in den Bereichen der Phonologie, der Morphologie, der Syntax und des Lexikons beleuchtet. Dabei gewinnen die Studierenden vertiefte Einblicke in den historischen Werdegang der englischen Sprache im Besonderen und in Gesetzmäßigkeiten des Sprachwandels im Allgemeinen.

Inhalt:

Innerhalb von nicht mehr als 40 bis 50 Generationen, die zwischen der Herrschaft von König Alfred und der Gegenwart liegen, hat sich das Englische so stark verändert, dass es beim Vergleich eines altenglischen mit einem neuenglischen Text gleichen Inhalts kaum mehr als dieselbe Sprache zu erkennen ist. Viele Bereiche des Sprachsystems waren extremen Veränderungsprozessen unterworfen. Diese Tatsache und die relativ zahlreich erhaltenen Zeugnisse früherer Sprachzustände, z.B. verschiedene Bibelübersetzungen, machen das Englische zu einem lohnenden Forschungsgegenstand für die historische Linguistik. Das Seminar bietet einen Überblick über die Entwicklung der englischen Sprache vom Altenglischen bis heute. Neben grundlegenden Aspekten der historischen Linguistik werden Kontinuität und Wandel vor allem in den Bereichen der Phonologie, der Morphologie, der Syntax und des Lexikons beleuchtet. Dabei gewinnen die Studierenden vertiefte Einblicke in den historischen Werdegang der englischen Sprache im Besonderen und in Gesetzmäßigkeiten des Sprachwandels im Allgemeinen.

Inhalt:

Bei der Wahl Ihres Themas im schriftlichen Staatsexamen in Linguistik haben Sie im Studiengang Lehramt an Gymnasien unter anderem die Möglichkeit, eine mittelenglische oder altenglische Textklausur zu bearbeiten. Wenn Sie sich für die Sprachgeschichte interessieren, sind Sie in diesem Vorbereitungskurs genau richtig. Mindestens zwei Semester vor Ihrem Examen, aber gern auch schon zur Orientierung früher, sollten Sie an diesem Repetitorium teilnehmen, um Ihre Kenntnis der englischen Sprachgeschichte und des Mittelenglischen (gegebenenfalls auch des Altenglischen) zu vertiefen. In dieser Übung werden zum einen theoretische Fragestellungen überblicksartig geklärt, zum anderen geht es um die praktische Bearbeitung von mittelenglischen (und altenglischen) Staatsexamensklausuren der letzten Jahre. Der Schwerpunkt wird in diesem Semester erneut auf der mittelenglischen Textklausur liegen. Die mittelenglischen Klausuren bauen immer auf eine stark eingegrenzte Auswahl aus den Werken Geoffrey Chaucers auf, speziell aus den Canterbury Tales und aus Troilus and Criseyde, woraus zunächst eine Passage zu übersetzen ist. Daher wird zusätzlich ein Intensivblockkurs Übersetzung Mittelenglisch-Deutsch angeboten (0,7 SWS).
Studierende anderer Studiengänge mit vertieftem Interesse an der englischen Sprachgeschichte sind in diesem Kurs ebenfalls willkommen.
Kursunterlagen werden auf dem "Virtuellen Campus" bereitgestellt. Das Passwort wird zu Vorlesungsbeginn bekanntgegeben.

Inhalt:

Die Lehrveranstaltung soll gezielt auf die Klausur in englischer Sprachwissenschaft (Unterrichtsfach) vorbereiten. Zielgruppe sind Studierende des Lehramts an Grund- und Mittelschulen, Realschulen und beruflichen Schulen - vgl. hierzu alte LPO (2002): LPO I, §48 (4) 1.c) und neue LPO (2008): LPO I, §44 (3) 1.a). Auf der Basis des verbindlich festgelegten und für ganz Bayern einheitlichen Lektürekanons sollen die im Laufe des Studiums erworbenen sprachwissenschaftlichen Kenntnisse wiederholt und speziell auf die Anforderungen der Prüfung hin vertieft und systematisiert werden. Besprochen werden weiterhin die Modalität der Fragestellungen bei dieser Prüfung und die zu früheren Terminen gestellten Aufgaben. Gegen Ende des Semesters werden Übungsklausuren zur Überprüfung des erreichten Kenntnisstands durchgeführt.

Die Lehrveranstaltung dient der Vorbereitung auf die wissenschaftliche Klausur nach LPO I §64 (3) 1b "Aufgabe aus der Sprachwissenschaft - Linguistik synchron" für das Lehramt an Gymnasien.

Auf der Basis des bayerischen Lektürekanons zur englischen Sprachwissenschaft und weiterer Texte sollen die im Laufe des Studiums erworbenen sprachwissenschaftlichen Kenntnisse relevanter Teilbereiche (Teil A: Phonetik und Phonologie/Syntax/Text- und Stilanalyse/Lexikologie, Morphologie und Phraseologie; Teil B: Variation und Wandel) wiederholt und speziell auf die Anforderungen der Prüfung hin vertieft werden. Es werden zentrale Texte des Lektürekanons sowie ausgewählte Aufgaben aus früheren Klausuren besprochen.

Auf der Basis des vorgegebenen und für ganz Bayern einheitlichen Lektürekanons sollen die sprachwissenschaftlichen Kenntnisse der Studierenden in Hinblick auf die Anforderungen der Klausur erweitert und systematisiert werden.
