In diesem Kurs geht es um die neusten Fortschritte in der Familiensoziologie. Es hat verscheidende Ziele: 1. Ziel und Inhalt Der Globalisierungsprozess bedeutet nicht nur eine rasche Zunahme grenzüberschreitender Austausch- und Interaktionsbeziehungen, sondern auch eine wachsende Dominanz des Weltmarktes in den Nationalstaaten. Die damit einhergehende steigende Interdependenz der Akteure und die rasche globale Vernetzung durch moderne Informations- und Kommunikationssysteme erhöhen die Geschwindigkeit technologischer Innovationen und ökonomischer Wandlungsprozesse und revolutionieren die sozialen Strukturen moderner Gesellschaften. In diesem Seminar wird die Frage diskutiert, wie der Globalisierungsprozess durch länderspezifische Kontexte gefiltert wird und sich auf die Bildungs-, Berufs- und Familienverläufe der Individuen in verschiedenen OECD-Ländern auswirkt. Eine zu prüfende Grundthese lautet, dass der Globalisierungsprozess auf sehr verschiedene, historisch gewachsene Institutionensysteme und relativ starre Ungleichheitsstrukturen in den Nationalstaaten trifft, dort jeweils andere gesellschaftliche Problemkonstellationen hervorruft, die dann wiederum zu verschiedenen institutionellen Steuerungsstrategien im Umgang mit der Globalisierung führen. Konzeptionell wird sich das Seminar vor allem auf einen evolutionären Sozialstrukturansatz auf der Makroebene stützen, der mit einem dynamischen Rational Choice-Ansatz auf der Mikroebene verbunden wird. Over a period of two consecutive semesters, students will conduct their own research projects in the field of sociological research on education and the labour market. The empirical analyses will be based on Starting Cohort 6 of the German National Educational Panel Study (NEPS), a large-scale longitudinal survey of the working-age population in Germany. The first part of the seminar (Winter term 2019/20) will be devoted to identifying a relevant research question against the background of the current state of research, deriving theory-guided hypotheses and developing a suitable research design. The second part of the seminar (Summer term 2020) will be devoted to working with the data and transferring the findings of the projects into a scientific research article.

It is not necessary to register for the seminar in advance (e.g. via Flexnow, via email, etc.). More information about the course and registration guidelines will only be provided during the first seminar session. Students should be familiar with the contents of the compulsory lecture Research design and multiple linear and binary logistic regression analysis. Moreover, students are required to be familiar with any statistics package of their choice (e.g. Stata, SPSS, R, ) to be able to work on their empirical research. These skills could either be acquired or refreshed in self-studies or by attending a relevant course at the methods chair. Language of instruction: English. Module-related examination: Term paper (time: 3 months); written in English.

Replications are an essential part of science as they fulfil several functions: they allow the validation or rejection of previous results, improve precision, help to find errors or weak spots and can extend internal and external validity. In this seminar, participants will replicate a previous study. After a brief introduction of the theoretical foundations of replications, participants will have the choice to pick a study of their interest and work on the replication during the semester. In regular meetings, participants will present their progress, which will be discussed in the plenary sessions. The sessions include a lab session where students are assisted with their statistical analyses. The final grade depends on the term paper (100%).
Note that this course is partially blocked as there is not a session every week. Meeting dates will be provided during the first seminar session.

The seminar deals with the transition from education to the labour market. We will read and discuss the main theoretical approaches that connect education to labour market placement and outcomes. In addition, we will consider how country differences in the setup of educational systems and labour market structures influence the transition from school to work. The theoretical considerations will be complemented by a discussion of empirical studies.
