- Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches
- The seminar will be conducted in English, including readings, discussion and assessment. The assessment will be marked according to criteria, and not language skills. I understand that speaking in a foreign language will be daunting for some (or most) students, so will aim to keep the mood relaxed, and any possible difficulties can be discussed in German.
- Inhalt
- Marriage is the traditional and socially accepted method of consensual partnering. It is a fundamental social institution which organises adult life; regulating both sexuality and reproduction and defining care-giving and bread-winning roles. There has, however, been a substantial shift in patterns of family formation and marriage as an institution is changing across the Western world. This seminar will explore contemporary changes in marriage from demographic, social and economic perspectives, and discuss current theories about why these changes have occurred and the likely future of marriage. Particular attention will be paid to new family forms, including cohabitation, step-families, sole-parent headed households and „living apart together‟ relationships. Topics covered include: marriage as a social institution, marital status and well being, non- standard family forms, the value of marriage.
