Participation in this Übung is recommended for anyone with a strong interest in Linguistics. For those BA students planning on doing their Ergänzungsmodul in Linguistics, for all students doing Lehramt Gymnasium and for all MA students, the course is obligatory at a certain point in their studies, so it is recommended to do it as early as possible. These participants are required to reserve the following times and dates: 19.04. 08:00-10:00 (s.t.), 02.05. 08:00-10:00 (s.t.), 03.05. 08:00-12:00 (s.t.). Inhalt:

English is universally characterised as a "West Germanic" language without further qualifications - without any mention of a Romance influence, putting it in the same category as the other West Germanic languages German and Dutch. But a short glance at the 40 content words in the British national anthem shows that 17 of them (= 42.5 %) are etymologically French. This is not the case in the other West Germanic languages: in the German anthem there are none and, in the Dutch, four. Why should this be so?

• Under the Norman dynasty, French became the official language in England and remained in that position for at least two centuries;
• most kings from the Shakespearean dramas never spoke a word in English in real life,
• the English parliament used French until the very end of the Middle Ages;
• in English courts of law, French continued to be used until its abolition in 1731.
• A modern analysis of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) showed that 62,33% of all English words in the OED were of French or Latin origin, while only 25% are Germanic (c.f. Finkenstaedt/Wolff 1973).
• In 1977, Bailey and Maroldt published their much debated theory that Middle English was in fact a Romance-Germanic (semi-)creole, in which the original Gemanic structure of Anglo-Saxon had been so deeply altered by the French contact language that the result warranted the classification as a new language.

In this course we will look into the historical facts of this intense language contact, the actual linguistic loans and convergence phenomena, and we will critically evaluate the modern debates on the degree of French influence on English. That much can already be revealed beforehand: French influence is certainly much greater than common anglistic knowledge would have it.

Inhalt:

@InterestedLingusiticsStudentsSS24: Globalization and digitization are the driving forces of our time, changing the way we live, the way we work, the way we obtain information, and, most importantly for this seminar, the way we communicate. With globalization and increased mobility comes the need to connect people linguistically (cf. Galloway & Rose 2015: 11). This is why we are going to look at the spread of English around the globe and how it is used as a lingua franca among people who do not share their first language as a means of negotiating meaning and establishing relationships (cf. Seidlhofer 2011: 7) in the first part of the seminar. We will pay particular attention to comprehension-enhancing as well as rapport- and solidarity-promoting strategies such as translanguaging or repair (cf. Kaur 2022). Since ELF interaction takes, to a great extent, place via the internet (cf. Vettorel 2014: 27), we will concentrate on the bestest features of NET$PEAK in the second part of this course before connecting the two fields of study to investigate how ELF users communicate virtually. We are going to explore various virtual environments, especially on social media – from the blogosphere to Instagram – and analyze how multimodal means such as emojis, memes, or hashtags enrich and change meaning-making processes.

Inhalt:

Conversations lie at the very heart of human interaction: In local and global contexts alike, they shape our relationships, decisions and future pathways. In this seminar, we want to explore major mechanisms of conversations (such as turn-taking, repair, preference organization and action formation), drawing on theories and tools from conversation analysis and interactional linguistics. Using digital opportunities available in the language teaching lab, we will look into how conversational data can be obtained, transcribed, coded and analysed. The knowledge gained will be applied to investigate conversations in diverse contexts, such as customer-service interactions, computer-mediated communication or intercultural encounters. Live dialogues with professionals from fields in which conversations play a pivotal role (psychologist, language teacher) as well as (meta-)conversations with intelligent machines are intended.

Diese Lehrveranstaltung behandelt die Entwicklung der englischen Sprache vom Altenglischen bis heute unter besonderer Berücksichtigung von Lexikologie und Lexikographie, Phonologie, Morphologie und Syntax. Sie vermittelt überblicksartig Grundkenntnisse von der Geschichte der englischen Sprache und macht dabei, vor dem Hintergrund der wichtigsten soziohistorischen Ereignisse, die tiefgreifenden Änderungen vom Alt- zum Neuenglischen deutlich.

Inhalt:

While English typically is conceived as a foreign language, due to sociocultural and sociopolitical reasons, it has had an "inevitable presence" (Mair 2019) in Germany and appears to expand, for instance as a medium of instruction in schools and universities, as a working language in international companies, and as a lingua franca, esp. in multilingual urban settings. In this course, we will consider several areas in which English and German are in contact. Our overview will include discussions on attitudes towards English by speakers of German, typical formal and informal usage domains of English in Germany, mutual influence (e.g. in terms of loanwords), as well as analyses of characteristic features of German learner English from the perspectives of Second Language Acquisition and Learner Corpus Research. In addition, we will go beyond the narrow German context and take a look at contexts in which German and English have been in long-term contact (e.g. Pennsylvania German).

Inhalt:

This course is designed for students working on (smaller or larger) research projects in English Linguistics connected to the instructor's seminars, Uebungen, and beyond. This includes supervision of the theoretical and empirical parts of presentations, term papers and final theses. It gives students the opportunity to discuss their own research with the instructor in small groups or individually. The course covers analytic procedures (data collection and preparation, presentation and visualization) and formal aspects (such as style sheet and referencing), and it provides support in meeting the structural and administrative requirements of a presentation, paper or thesis. The sessions consist of tutorials in which students receive individual feedback on the structure, argument, progress and possible problems of their academic work. Inhalt:

This seminar is designed for advanced students. One aim is to provide a forum for the preparation and discussion of projects such as BA theses, Master's theses, Staatsarbeiten and PhD projects. We will thus discuss empirical and methodological issues relevant to such studies. Secondly, there will be hands-on presentations of the new research facilities for English linguist(ic)s at Bamberg University, the focus being on the variety of newly acquired English text collections. A third goal is to discuss current trends in linguistics, which will involve discussion of recent and forthcoming publications as well as conference and book reports. Where appropriate, additional meetings with individual subgroups of the class will be offered.

Inhalt:

The grammar of English (its morphology and especially its syntax) does not provide predetermined, unique ways of saying (or writing) something you want to express, but rather offers a variety of grammatical options with identical or similar meanings. For instance, without implying a meaning difference, you can say either of the following:
(1) The event is aimed at children and parents / parents and children.
(2) The waiter brought the wine we had ordered to the table / to the table the wine we had ordered.
(3) Sandy picked up the paper / picked the paper up.
(4) The other person s nose / nose of the other person was broken.
(5) He had to give the FBI his fingerprints / his fingerprints to the FBI.
(6) The whole audience started laughing / to laugh.
(7) They lighted / lit the stack of wood from below.
(8) We wanted to try to save / to try and save expenses.
(9) The only thing he could do was wait / to wait.
(10) Supposing that / Supposing you had good marks, would you go to university?

On the other hand, there are subtle meaning differences, mirrored in the grammatical differences, between the following:
(11) The map indicates all the navigable rivers / the rivers navigable.
(12) The teacher helped him complete / to complete his homework.
(13) They heard the clatter of hoofs / hooves from the outside.
(14) We sprayed paint on the wall / the wall with paint.

What is interesting about grammatical variation phenomena such as (1)-(14) is the fact that they are not random, but allow us to gather insights into the ways speakers and hearers process language: Cognitive processes in language involve an intricate network of interacting functional factors that may reinforce or counteract each other. These factors afford insights into the forces that shape grammar and drive linguistic change and will be the focus of this seminar.

Drawing on large electronic text collections (corpora), we can explore and measure speakers choices in cases where the grammar provides two or more options. In addition, we will pursue a novel research question: Can AI tools based on Large Language Models (e.g. ChatGPT) produce the same effects and imitate human behaviour? Both competencies (handling corpora and LLMs) will be essential future skills for students of English and language experts.

Students in this seminar will be expected to present a case study based on a research article. In their term papers, they will carry out and report on a related corpus-based small-scale research project with an optional AI-based component.

This course is designed for students working on (smaller or larger) research projects in English Linguistics connected to the instructor's seminars, Uebungen, and beyond. This includes supervision of the theoretical and empirical parts of presentations, term papers and final theses. It gives students the opportunity to discuss their own research with the instructor in small groups or individually. The course covers analytic procedures (data collection and preparation, presentation and visualization) and formal aspects (such as style sheet and referencing), and it provides support in meeting the structural and administrative requirements of a presentation, paper or thesis. The sessions consist of tutorials in which students receive individual feedback on the structure, argument, progress and possible problems of their academic work. For final theses, please contact the instructor at your earliest convenience to discuss your topic and make individual appointments.

Inhalt:

This course is designed to introduce beginning students to the central terms and topics in current (English) linguistics. While the focus will be on present-day English, many modern irregularities (such as the differences between spelling and pronunciation or irregular verbs) can be explained in historical terms. We will therefore occasionally digress into the history of the English language in order to better understand the present. Topics to be dealt with include phonetics, phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax and sociolinguistics. One class will also be devoted to the major contrasts between English and German. In order to equip students with the basic analytical skills that are essential for future linguists and teachers alike, part of the course especially the accompanying tutorials and workshops will be practical in nature. We will therefore analyse authentic modern English texts from a linguistic point of view.

This course starts from the assumption that English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education can hugely benefit from linguistic insights and thus highlights the relevance of linguistic expertise for the EFL classroom. It complements the theoretical and methodological insights and skills in this area. Suitability for modules:
This course is suitable for all degree courses involving English Linguistics (Lehramt, BA, MA, etc.) where 2, 3, 4 or 6 ECTS are required. Students enrolled in the MA English and American Studies can take part in this course, but they can only get it credited as part of the Master s Thesis Module in Linguistics ("Oberseminar"). That means, it will not count towards your Master Module, Consolidation Module or Profile Module.

Combination with "Methods and Theories in Linguistics":
In the early weeks of term, we offer an introductory block familiarizing students with linguistic research methods (the Übung "Methods and Theories in Linguistics"): https://univis.uni-bamberg.de/form?dsc=anew/lecture_view&lvs=guk/angl/engls/method&anonymous=1&founds=guk/angl/engls/method&sem=2024s&codeset=utf8. Participation in this Übung is recommended for anyone with a strong interest in Linguistics. These participants are required to reserve the following times and dates: 19.04. 08:00-10:00 (s.t.), 02.05. 08:00-10:00 (s.t.), 03.05. 08:00-12:00 (s.t.). Inhalt:

Do you sometimes wonder whether an expression you have heard or read is actually appropriate to use in a certain context? Do you regularly rack your brains for a good way of expressing your ideas in an essay or term paper? Do people sometimes ask you to proofread their texts but you find it hard to judge their language? Do you, even though you know an expression is wrong, often fail to find a more suitable alternative? Are you considering a career in teaching English but feel daunted by the prospect of corrections piling up on your desk? Know-how of the right digital resources can help you with these tasks.

From a linguistic standpoint, corpora (i.e. digital text collections representative of one or more than one regional variety, genre and text type) are the obvious solution. Corpus skills put users in a position to check whether a certain word, collocation or syntactic structure conforms to the norms of competent language users, and they provide insights into what these norms are (in terms of registers and regional varieties). However, recent developments in the field of artificial intelligence and the availability of AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, DeepL Write, Grammarly), which can also be used for writing purposes, might beg the following question: Why should I learn how to use corpora in order to improve my writing skills if AI tools can simply do the job for me?

In this seminar, we will cover both: The practical coursework aims to enable participants to use corpus tools to assess their own and other writers text production while at the same time investigating what kind of advantage AI tools can bring for correction purposes. This will be framed by more theoretical insights into essential areas of language use, such as academic vocabulary, grammatical variation, collocations, registers and British and American standards.

This course is designed for students working on (smaller or larger) research projects in English Linguistics connected to the instructor's seminars, Uebungen, and beyond. This includes supervision of the theoretical and empirical parts of presentations, term papers and final theses. It gives students the opportunity to discuss their own research with the instructor in small groups or individually. The course covers analytic procedures (data collection and preparation, presentation and visualization) and formal aspects (such as style sheet and referencing), and it provides support in meeting the structural and administrative requirements of a presentation, paper or thesis. The sessions consist of tutorials in which students receive individual feedback on the structure, argument, progress and possible problems of their academic work. Mindestens zwei Semester vor Ihrem Examen, aber gern auch schon zur Orientierung früher, sollten Sie an einem Kurs teilnehmen, der Sie auf die schriftliche Examensprüfung in englischer Sprachwissenschaft vorbereitet. Bei der Wahl Ihres Themengebiets haben Sie im Studiengang Lehramt an Gymnasien unter anderem die Möglichkeit, eine mittelenglische oder altenglische Textklausur zu bearbeiten. Wenn Sie sich für die Sprachgeschichte interessieren, sind Sie in diesem Vorbereitungskurs genau richtig. Um Ihre Kenntnis der englischen Sprachgeschichte und des Mittelenglischen aufzubauen und zu vertiefen, ist es vollkommen ausreichend, die Übung Englische Sprachgeschichte besucht zu haben. Weitere Vorkenntnisse sind nicht nötig. Der Schwerpunkt wird in diesem Semester erneut auf der mittelenglischen Textklausur liegen.

Hier ein paar Fakten, die Ihnen bei der Entscheidung helfen können, ob dieser Kurs vielleicht etwas für Sie wäre: Die schriftliche Examensprüfung besteht, wie bei der neuenglischen Textklausur auch, aus Fragen zu einer Textpassage und einem Aufsatzthema. Anders als bei der neuenglischen Klausur können Sie aber die Texte der mittelenglischen Klausur im Vorfeld genau vorbereiten, denn die Passagen stammen immer aus einem festgelegten Textkorpus. Dieses besteht aus einer (übersichtlichen) Auswahl aus den Werken Geoffrey Chaucers; genauer: zehn Geschichten der Canterbury Tales und die ersten beiden Bücher von Troilus and Criseyde. Chaucers Londoner Englisch des 14. Jahrhunderts ist die Grundlage des heutigen englischen Standards und bietet daher die am leichtesten verständliche mittelenglische Varietät.

In der Examensübung werden zum einen über die Übung Englische Sprachgeschichte hinausgehende theoretische Fragestellungen überblicksartig geklärt, hauptsächlich geht es aber um die praktische Bearbeitung von mittelenglischen Staatsexamensklausuren der letzten Jahre. Die erste Frage zum Text ist immer eine Übersetzung ins Deutsche, weswegen zusätzlich zu der Examensübung eine Übung in mehreren kleinen Blöcken (insgesamt eine Semesterwochenstunde) zur Übersetzung Mittelenglisch-Deutsch angeboten wird.

Studierende anderer Studiengänge mit vertieftem Interesse an der englischen Sprachgeschichte sind in diesem Kurs ebenfalls willkommen. Kursunterlagen werden auf dem "Virtuellen Campus" bereitgestellt. Das Passwort wird zu Vorlesungsbeginn bekannt gegeben.

Inhalt:

Die Lehrveranstaltung dient der Vorbereitung auf die wissenschaftliche Klausur nach LPO I §64 (3) 1b "Aufgabe aus der Sprachwissenschaft - Linguistik synchron" für das Lehramt an Gymnasien.

Auf der Basis des bayerischen Lektürekanons zur englischen Sprachwissenschaft und weiterer Texte sollen die im Laufe des Studiums erworbenen sprachwissenschaftlichen Kenntnisse relevanter Teilbereiche (Teil A: Phonetik und Phonologie/Syntax/Text- und Stilanalyse/Lexikologie, Morphologie und Phraseologie; Teil B: Variation und Wandel) wiederholt und speziell auf die Anforderungen der Prüfung hin vertieft werden. Es werden zentrale Texte des Lektürekanons sowie ausgewählte Aufgaben aus früheren Klausuren besprochen.

Inhalt:

Die Lehrveranstaltung soll gezielt auf die Klausur in englischer Sprachwissenschaft (Unterrichtsfach) vorbereiten. Zielgruppe sind Studierende des Lehramts an Grund- und Mittelschulen, Realschulen und beruflichen Schulen - vgl. hierzu alte LPO (2002): LPO I, §48 (4) 1.c) und neue LPO (2008): LPO I, §44 (3) 1.a). Auf der Basis des verbindlich festgelegten und für ganz Bayern einheitlichen Lektürekanons sollen die im Laufe des Studiums erworbenen sprachwissenschaftlichen Kenntnisse wiederholt und speziell auf die Anforderungen der Prüfung hin vertieft und systematisiert werden. Besprochen werden weiterhin die Modalität der Fragestellungen bei dieser Prüfung und die zu früheren Terminen gestellten Aufgaben. Gegen Ende des Semesters werden Übungsklausuren zur Überprüfung des erreichten Kenntnisstands durchgeführt.

Description:
Why is English like that? Why is knight spelled with a kn and a gh? Why does English have so many synonyms, like start, begin, commence or clever, intelligent, astute and bright? How come that we hardly have any, in fact only eight, inflectional endings in English today? And how are German and English related, as they obviously are --- just compare, for instance, goose and Gans, house and Haus, knight and Knecht, light and Licht?
This lecture addresses all these questions, and more. Students will be given an overview of the development of the English language from its earliest attestations in the late 7th century (Old English) until today in the context of the textual transmission and sociohistorical changes. Selected passages from different periods will be introduced. Special areas of interest are the development of the vocabulary, sounds and spelling, morphology and syntax.
This lecture is particularly designed for students of BA "Anglistik/Amerikanistik", Aufbaumodul (2 ECTS). Students from other BA programmes can earn 2 or 4 ECTS points for their Studium Generale (pass/fail), and visiting students can earn 2 or 4 ungraded (pass/fail ) or graded ECTS points. Everybody else who is interested is of course welcome, too, and may attend the lecture as a guest without ECTS points.
Note that students of Lehramt Gymnasium and of B.A. Medieval Studies in their Basismodul must attend the Uebung "Englische Sprachgeschichte", not this lecture.

Inhalt:

This lecture provides a broad overview of the phenomenon of variation, which is a central property of English (and actually all natural languages). In the course of the lecture, we will consider several types of variation at various levels of analysis (orthography, phonology, morphology, syntax, pragmatics, etc.) and will look at different dimensions of variation, such as mode/medium (e.g. written vs. spoken language), region (e.g. traditional regional dialects and postcolonial varieties) as well as social (e.g. gender, age, education, profession) and stylistic factors. In addition, attitudes toward variation and related issues such as standardization will be discussed.

Inhalt:

Dieser Workshop bereitet Sie gezielt auf das Staatsexamen Linguistik synchron (LA Gymnasium) vor und sollte direkt vor dem Examen, also im gleichen Semester, belegt werden. In der ersten Sitzung erhalten Sie praktische Tipps für die schriftliche Prüfung. Zudem haben Sie die Gelegenheit, sich intensiv auf den A-Teil vorzubereiten. Zu den klassischen Prüfungsaufgaben (Transkription, Satzanalyse, morphologische Analyse) erhalten Sie individuelles Feedback bezüglich Form und Inhalt. In der zweiten Sitzung schreiben Sie eine Probeklausur (A- und B-Teil), die Sie etwa eine Woche später im Einzelgespräch zurückbekommen.

Inhalt:

Der Workshop richtet sich an Lehramtsstudierende, die nach diesem Semester ihr Staatsexamen in Englisch ablegen wollen. Neben Strategien zur Vorbereitung und Durchführung der Übersetzungsklausur im Staatsexamen wird der Workshop Gelegenheit zur Erweiterung des prüfungsrelevanten Wortschatzes und zur vertieften Beschäftigung mit syntaktischen Fehlerschwerpunkten bieten. Anhand von praktischen Beispielen aus vergangenen Prüfungen soll erarbeitet werden, was eine gelungene Übersetzung ausmacht.
