Inhalt:

This course deals with the relationship between language and culture. We will start out by examining different aspects of language that are particularly tightly connected to cultural considerations, for instance rules of verbal interaction (“ethnography of speaking”), kin systems and conceptual structures of the natural world (body parts, taxonomies of living beings), and their reflections in linguistic structures. We will later turn to more theoretical questions concerning, for instance the extent to which linguistic and cultural practices may influence the way we see the world (Sapir-Whorf), the nature of the relation between language and culture, levels of representational categories and issues pertaining to methodologically sound comparison of languages and cultures. The goal of the course is to familiarise students with theoretical concepts pertaining to anthropological linguistics and the basic toolkit for their empirical study. Given that both language and culture comprise sets of knowledge that is mostly tacit, a central goal of the course is to train ourselves to reflect upon the languages and cultures we are familiar with and make our knowledge explicit in a clear manner. Basic reading and more detailed information on the structure and content of the course will be made available closer to the start date of the teaching period.

Inhalt:

One of the central characteristics of human language and individual languages is diversity: a wealth of diverse phonological, grammatical and lexical/semantic structures can be observed across languages, and across communities and cultures. A more basic dimension of language diversity is the variable design of language within a specific community, that is how different speakers from different social groups differ in their use and representation of linguistic structures. Social factors correlating with language diversity in Western and other economically developed societies are regional background, age, gender, socioeconomic status, education and occupation, and we will focus on these for the purposes of this course. However, we will also touch upon more recent work on smaller-scale communities where other social dimensions are often relevant, for instance clan, moiety or “skin” membership in societies of Papuanesia and Australia. We will also deal with choices of language in multilingual communities and minority languages, including Western societies, and the basic dimensions of language contact.

Students will be expected to complete regular assignments and to devise their individual small research projects on a topic of individual choice. References and sources will be made available through the VC page of this course closer to the beginning of the semester.

Linguistische Werkstatt

Inhalt:

Die Linguistische Werkstatt ist eine Vortragsreihe mit Diskussionscharakter, in der ein breites Spektrum an linguistischen Fragestellungen behandelt wird. Vorträge werden sowohl von in Bamberg tätigen also auch auswärtigen Sprachwissenschaftlerinnen und Sprachwissenschaftlern gehalten; auch Promovierende können die Ergebnisse ihrer Arbeit vortragen und zur Diskussion stellen. Die Reihe soll vor allem ein Diskussionsforum bieten, das über die Grenzen der einzelnen Fächer hinweg unterschiedliche Ansätze und Fragestellungen innerhalb der Linguistik umfasst. Promovierende der BaGL können die regelmäßige Teilnahme an der Werkstatt als Teil ihrer Pflichtveranstaltungen anrechnen lassen.

Inhalt:

In this course we will study the development of reasoning and theorising about syntactic structure over the last 60 or so years. We will be dealing with conceptions of words combine into phrases, and phrases into higher-order phrases and sentences, and how such syntactic structures are mapped onto semantic structures of event representations. Particular topics of discussion will be the different conceptions of syntactic structures as constituency and dependency, recursion, binding and complex sentences, and questions concerning argument structure. We will consider frameworks from both the generative-formalist and the typological-functionalist tradition.
