Joshua Wilner (Prof. at the University of New York) Wordsworth and Mandelbrot on the Coast of Britain

Veranstalter: Lehrstuhl für Engl. Literaturwissenschaft und Bamberg Graduate School of Literary, Cultural and Media Studies

Dienstag, 16.6.2015: 16:00 - 18:00 Uhr; U5/01.22

This talk brings together two, on the face of it, very different meditations on the western coast of Britain: the Ascent of Snowdon in the final book of Wordsworth's Prelude, and Benoit Mandelbrot's path-breaking paper, "How Long is the Coast of Britain?" (1967), which led the way to The Fractal Geometry of Nature (1976). It seeks to suggest that there is a relationship, both structural and historical, between the way Worthworth'S autobiographical poem unsettles its own teleologial design and the particular way fractal geometry - a geometry of nature, as Mandelbrot emphasizes - unsettles Euclidean space.
