- Inhalt
- This "Übung" will focus on the historical development of one of the three major genres in English Literature, i.e. poetry, between the Romantic Period and the first decades of the twentieth century. We will discuss selected authors and poems with respect to their historical and cultural contexts: William Blake; the two generations of Romantic poets (Wordsworth, Coleridge, Shelley, Byron, Keats); the Victorian poets (e.g. Tennyson, Browning, D.G. and C. Rossetti, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Swinburne, Wilde, Hopkins, Hardy); as for the twentieth century, sessions will be devoted to Modernism, esp. T.S. Eliot and the War Poets.
(It is therefore an ideal complement to the poetry lecture offered this term!)
For the preparation of classes, or for further reading at home, the anthologies mentioned below are recommended.
