- The vernacular literature which was written in England before the Norman Conquest (1066) shows a fascinating variety. Different genres of poetry have come down to us, translations of Latin prose works and independent English prose, Germanic and Christian topics, tradition and innovation; and very often the authors show great art and inventiveness in reconciling and combining what appear to be diametrically opposed approaches and topics. The result is a literary treasure hoard with its very own, special character. This lecture wants to provide access to the literature of the Anglo-Saxons. As background information, an outline of their history and culture will be provided. In the main part, particular literary works will be introduced and the tension both between orality and literacy and the vernacular and Latin as the typical language of learning will be emphasized. Other topics include the medium of the manuscript and the transmission of the texts. The Old English language is the key to the Anglo-Saxon literary world. Therefore its main features regarding phonology, morphology, syntax and vocabulary will be explained in the course of the lecture.
An Übung / Tutorium which focusses on the Old English language and the critical reading of selected Old English texts (taught by Benjamin Pohl, B.A.) will accompany the lecture. The Übung / Tutorium is both a separate course and a highly recommended – though not an obligatory – supplement to the lecture.
