The course will be taught through lectures and seminars.
Prüfungsformen
Regular participation and careful as well as thorough reading of all assignments are essential to your successful completion of the course. 2 or 3 ECTS: oral examination last week of the semester (20 or 30 minutes respectively; further information during term time). 4 ECTS for Joint Degree Students: course work (1,500-1,800 words, deadline 31.12.2009) and oral examination (20 minutes, last week of the semester). No group assessments!
- Inhalt
- In this course we will discuss a wide array of writings about love, sex, marriage and infidelity from the Medieval Ages till the 20th century. The texts range from literary and theological works, medical and legal writings, to conduct books, chronicles and letters. They all focus on the emotional state of love, the physical act of sex, the social institution of marriage and individual cases of infidelity. Literary sources will include: Owl and Nightingale, Sir Orfeo, Arden of Faversham, William Shakespeare: A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Romeo and Juliet, John Dryden: Marriage à la Mode, James Shirley: Love’s Cruelty, D.H. Lawrence: The White Peacock, Margaret Drabble: The Millstone.
