- In this reading class, we will read (extracts from) a number of important works from the second half of the eighteenth century to 1800. It is a good preparation for exams for all students who wish to include, or focus on, Victorian novels. After a major section on Gothic novels, we will move over Jane Austen to such eminent Victorian novelists as Dickens, Thackeray, the Brontë sisters, Gaskell and Eliot, while not forgetting sensational fiction, e.g. by Wilkie Collins. The final sessions will be given to Oscar Wilde and Thomas Hardy.
This Übung accompanies Prof. Dr. Houswitschka's lecture on "The History of the English Novel II" (Di, 16-17.30, U5/122), giving students who are interested in reading and interpreting texts the opportunity to a more active engagement with the the novels mentioned in the lecture. However, attendance of the lecture is not compulsory if you wish to participate in this Übung.
What IS necessary though, is the readiness to read. You will not be expected to read all the texts discussed, but the extracts that will be provided on the Virtual Campus. All participants, however, will be expected to do a presentation on one text of their choice - which they MUST have read in full.
In addition to that, I strongly recommend, as minimum lecture, to read completely:
one gothic novel,
one novel by Jane Austen,
one novel of the eminent Victorian writers,
one novel of the later novelists.

2. Requirements to obtain a "Schein":
2 ECTS are given for regular, active participation and the short presentation.
4 ECTS are given for providing an extensive handout (1000-1500 words) in addition to your presentation.
