4. Theaterexkursion nach London:
Im Rahmen der beiden Seminare "Theatre and Drama in the Long Eighteenth Century" und "Twenty-First Century British Theatre and Drama" (PS, PD Dr. A. Müller) veranstaltet der Lehrstuhl für Englische Literaturwissenschaft eine Exkursion nach London.
Es ist geplant neben Aufführungen zeitgenössischer Stücke auch die Inszenierung einer Restoration Comedy zu besuchen. Die genaue Auswahl der vier Stücke wird in den Kursen besprochen werden, sobald die Londoner Spielpläne für die neue Saison vorliegen.
Die Kosten für Flug (ab Nürnberg), Hotelunterkunft und Flughafentransfer betragen ca. 350 €, hinzu kommen knapp 150 € für vier Theatertickets. Die Exkursion kann voraussichtlich mit ca. 100 € p.P. aus Studiengebühren bezuschusst werden.
Sie richtet sich an alle Studierende der Anglistik, vorrangig jedoch an die Teilnehmer der beiden Drama-Seminare. Die Exkursion ist auf 20 Personen beschränkt.

- Inhalt
- From the Restoration (1660) to the Licensing Act of 1737 and beyond London theatre and drama recovered from the oppression of the Puritans who dominated England after civil war in the 1640s. We will read representative plays by such authors as Behn, Etherege, Wycherley, Congreve, Fraquhar, Addison, Lillo, Gay, Goldsmith, Sheridan, and Holcroft (see list below). We will do close readings of the texts and contextualise them in their social and political background. It is difficult to say how much of the audience would belong to the aristocracy and the court and who belonged to the middle classes. Theater has been subject to marketplace conditions since the end of the sixteenth century, yet class emerges as an explicit issue for theatrical genre and authorship only after 1660. The older view was that the Restoration playhouse was an aristocratic playground. Today we know that there was a broader range of social classes in the audience than had been thought. Therefore the plays can be read as sophisticated representations of political and social negotations of the time. Every major feature of the theatrical system since 1660 such as the patents to Thomas Killigrew and William Davenant, the various types of control of the repertory, and the role of theatre managers depend on the institutionalization of limitations. The accessibility of theatre allows bourgeois tragedy to develop. Lillo regarded tragedy to be "the instrument of good to many". In Gay’s Beggar’s Opera English opera and theatre find an own language independent of Italian traditions. During the course of many decades after the Restoration, the specific class appeal of drama "ceases to be a disqualification and becomes a distinct advantage" (Aparna Dharwadker).

3. Excursion to London:
There will be a theatre excursion to London (20 Jan to 24 Jan 2010). We are planning to watch both plays by contemporary playwrights and at least one restoration comedy.
The trip will cost about 500 € (flight, hotel accommodation, airport transfer, four theatre tickets) and will be subsidized with students fees (about 100 €).
