- Since Arthur Conan Doyle published A Study in Scarlet in 1887, Sherlock Holmes has probably become the best-known fictional detective on the planet. His adventures are not only still in print, but have also been turned into audio and comic books, radio plays, TV series, feature films and computer games. In addition, Conan Doyle’s comparatively small canon—four novels and fifty-six short stories—has been expanded by generations of writers and directors who have let the famous detective solve new crimes. For instance, Holmes has fought against Nazi Germany (e. g. in the movie Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon, USA 1943), discovered a new love in Billy Wilder’s The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (UK 1970) and proved his skills in a detective / science-fiction series crossover (Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century, US 1999-2001). Not to mention all the Holmes spoofs.
In this seminar, we will have a look at the detective’s literary forerunners, read a selection of the canonical texts, analyse both audio and visual adaptations of his cases and deal with a number of Holmes adventures beyond the Conan Doyle texts.
We will talk among other things about the Victorian/Edwardian background of Holmes’ world, the duo detective/chronicler (Holmes/Watson), narrative structure, crime and society, Holmes and/in Germany, get an introduction to film and TV analysis and compare the performances of famous actors who have played Sherlock Holmes.
