"The youth of America is their oldest tradition." (Oscar Wilde)
The coming-of-age of adolescents has always been one of the major themes of American literature. Twenty-first-century fiction also features the adolescent and the rite-de-passage in new takes on traditional genres such as the novel of development or the Bildungsroman. It does not come as a surprise that a nation that for centuries stylized itself as the epitome of newness and youthfulness is preoccupied with this issue also in its cultural products. This class will trace the development of the literature of "becoming" in the United States – one of the oldest traditions in American literature –, from its origins in the nineteenth century until today. The focus will be equally on female and male initiation as well as on generic, thematic and gender aspects, with an emphasis on contemporary manifestations of the phenomenon. Further cultural reverberations of the topic in visual media, such as filmic adaptations, movies, and TV-shows, will be examined on the side.

Time and availability permitting, discussions of movies like Rebel Without a Cause, The Graduate, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Smooth Talk, or The Breakfast Club and/or of filmic adaptations (Little Women, Less Than Zero, Girl, Interrupted, or The Virgin Suicides) will be included. In addition, we might dedicate one class meeting to a discussion of the cultural implications of TV-shows such as The Wonder Years, Dawson's Creek, Beverly Hills 90210, or Gossip Girl.
Lernergebnisse, Kompetenzen / Learning outcomes, Competences
Durch Beschäftigung mit einer aktuellen, spezifischen theoretischen Richtung aus dem Bereich der Kulturwissenschaften soll das methodologische Instrumentarium der Studierenden erweitert und zugleich die kritische Auseinandersetzung mit Prozessen der Theoriebildung angeregt werden.
