- Description:
The lecture provides an overview of the many ways in which the two major national varieties of English differ. As is well-known, British and American English diverge systematically in the pronunciation and distribution of certain phonemes and allophones. Similarly well-known are differences in the vocabulary, which happen to provide a frequently discussed topic in the teaching of English. Above and beyond such phonetic/phonological and lexical differences, recent research has shown that on the grammatical level, there is also a not-to-be-underestimated number of major and minor contrasts. These include differences in word formation, grammatical morphology, word order as well as syntactic relations.
The lecture will contextualize linguistic contrasts with a view to the historical evolution of the relationship between British and American English and pragmatic differences characterizing speakers linguistic behaviour. It will equally aim at discovering system-inherent orientations that account for variety-specific tendencies. For this purpose, the diachronic dimension of the contrasts will be given an important place, and issues such as the myth of the colonial lag , the world-wide leadership of American English, formality and colloquialization will crop up repeatedly.
