- Inhalt
- Have you ever felt offended by a casual remark? Have you been infuriated by a political slogan, invigorated by a poem or persuaded to waste money by an advertisement? Even though we might hardly be aware of it, we constantly find ourselves manipulated through the power of language. What is it, however, that makes language such a potent device to exert control, to influence emotions and thus trigger social action?
In an attempt to answer these questions we will look at the very nature of language and its potential impacts on human thought and behaviour. We are going to explore how politicians and the media employ the power of persuasive language for their own ends and how the use of language can support or impede a fair-minded and even-handed living together between men and women, young and old, people of different ethnicities and social backgrounds. We will also investigate how different approaches to language standardisation tie in with the distribution of power in a postcolonial world.
It is the overall aim of the seminar for the participants to develop, through a deep understanding of the mechanisms behind, a critical awareness of how our own use of language can contribute to the building of a non-discriminatory society.
