- Description:
Psycholinguistics explores the relationship between the human mind and language. It treats the language user as an individual but an individual whose linguistic performance is determined by the strengths and limitations of the mental apparatus which we all share. Its aim is to trace similar patterns of linguistic behaviour across large groups of individual speakers of a particular language or of all languages. In this way, psycholinguists gain insights into the way in which the configuration of the human mind shapes communication.
In this seminar, the core areas of psycholinguistics will be explored, which are listed here along with some of their central questions:
- Language and the brain: What neurological activity is involved in reading, listening, writing and speaking? Which areas of the brain are involved in language, and in what way? Can characteristics of the human brain account for the fact that our species has developed language?
- Language storage and access: How is vocabulary stored in our minds, and how do we find a word when we need it? What form do grammar rules take?
- Language processing: What goes on when we speak, write, listen and read? How do we manage to convert meaning into a chain of sounds or letters, and vice versa?
- Comprehension theory: How do we integrate the meaning that we decode with our mental representation of a text? How does world knowledge tie in?
- Language in exceptional circumstances: How do language impairments such as dyslexia or stuttering come about? How does brain damage or age affect language? What is the effect of deafness on language?
The Übung that accompanies the Hauptseminar (Wednesdays, 10:15-11:00, U9/103) is designed to discuss oral presentations, handouts and termpapers individually and/or in small groups. Individual arrangements will be made also, if necessary, concerning the time of the Übung. Therefore clashes with other courses scheduled for the same time slot as the Übung can be avoided.
