- Inhalt
- Every four years the presidential elections in the United States remind us of what defines the nation and how the nation defines itself. New forms of democracy (most recently through forms of social media) come into being. The culture wars rage again, around by now familiar issues: gun control, gay marriage, religion. The political world is rife with scandal as the airwaves stream attack ads, internet platforms are astir with messages of support and rousing calls for action. Starting from discussion of the current and recent presidential campaigns, this seminar seeks to contextualize the electoral process against a broad historical canvas: Under what circumstances did the modern concept of the “presidential campaign” emerge? How does the Electoral College system work and what kind of problems can it cause? In what way has the media (especially radio, television, and the internet) impacted the campaign process? We study these questions by first undertaking a survey of key moments in the history of the race for the White House, in order to then focus on fictional, journalistic, and film representations of real or imagined presidential campaigns. The course will allow us to investigate literature and film as important vehicles for the constitution of democratic discourse, but also to examine these texts as platforms for political critique. Students are also invited to participate in the conference “Electoral Cultures: American Democracy and Choice” (co-organized by Dr. Banita) scheduled to take place in Munich the weekend prior to Election Day (November 1-4). Class texts will be selected from among the following:
Films
State of the Union (1948)
The Manchurian Candidate (1962; 2004)
The Best Man (1964)
The War Room (1993)
