- No specials prerequisites; at certain points during the course it will be crucial that a sufficient number of participants can bring their own notebooks to class.
The lecture will be in English.
Diese Lehrveranstaltung ist grundsätzlich für alle Studiengänge der englischen Sprachwissenschaft (Lehramt, BA, MA usw.) geeignet, in denen 2, 4 oder 6 ECTS als S/PSII/Ü eingebracht werden können.
8 ECTS sind nur für BA-Studierende nach Absprache mit dem Dozenten vor Semesterbeginn möglich.
- Inhalt
- This course is intended for students who have already had some general introduction to sociolinguistics or who at least have a strong interest in the topic and are not averse to some hands-on experience. We will familiarize ourselves with general sociolinguistic theory, focusing on two standard concepts: (i) linguistic variables, i.e. aspects of language that may vary systematically and can become objects of interest in sociolinguistic research, and (ii) social (including stylistic) variables that can help explain linguistic variation, for example in terms of speakers’ gender, age, socio-economic background or the contexts in which language is used. Apart from these fundamentals, the class will also be concerned with practical issues. Some of the questions that will be discussed and explored in practice are
• How can a sociolinguistic study be designed (development and use of different sociolinguistic tools like questionnaires, interviews, stimuli, reading tasks, etc.)?
• How does data collection work (including use of audio recording devices, data storage etc.)?
• What is the nature of linguistic and social variables, how are they quantified, and what are the consequiences for statistical analysis (e.g. nominal, ordinal, or interval-scaled variables)?
• What are the relevant statistical tests that can help the researcher decide whether an observed pattern of variation is significant?
We will be doing practical work on given datasets in class in order to acquire data analysis skills, concerning, for example, phonetic analysis, simple statistical methods, the graphical representation of results, etc. Ideally, participants will be acquire the theoretical knowledge, verbal repertoire, and practical skills necessary to develop and conduct their own experiments under supervision. It is strongly encouraged that credit for this class should be obtained by conducting a small-scale study of this kind.
