Scheinanforderungen:
2 ECTS: regular active participation in class + oral presentation
4 ECTS: regular active participation in class + oral presentation + short assignment
6 ECTS: regular active participation in class + oral presentation + written paper
8 ECTS sind nur für BA-Studierende nach Absprache mit der Dozentin vor Semesterbeginn möglich.

Diese Lehrveranstaltung ist für alle Studiengänge der englischen Sprachwissenschaft (Lehramt, BA, MA usw.) geeignet, in denen 2, 4 oder 6 ECTS erforderlich sind.

- Inhalt
- While some critics have focused on translations representing “poor copies of sparkling originals”, the majority emphasize the central importance of translating in building cross-cultural bridges. In a discrete but very powerful fashion, translation penetrates every sphere of this world from travel guides to the Olympics, from Facebook to the United Nations, facilitating mutual understanding, boosting the global economy and even preventing wars. And though the process of translating is as old as the history of languages itself and has shaped the world ever since, it was not before the end of the 20th century that translation studies began to emerge as a field of systematic scientific research in its own right.
In our seminar we will explore the discourse on the interdisciplinary field of translation studies from a diachronic and synchronic perspective, incorporating voices from different parts of the world (e.g. Europe, Asia, the Arab countries). We will set off looking at the very nature, scope and functions of translations and acquire theoretical tools that, against the backdrop of linguistic models (e.g. Vinay and Darbelnet, Halliday, House), will help us understand the process and evaluate the products of translation. Special focus will be put on aspects of equivalence between source and target text. We will also study cultural and ideological as well as philosophical approaches to the phenomenon of translation, consider new directions from the new media and investigate the role of the translator within society. Examples of literary, scientific, technical and audiovisual translation will enable us to apply all concepts discussed and will pave the way for individual research projects.
