Inhalt
Traditionally, research in Personality Psychology has primarily focused on individual differences primarily but has hardly taken the social context into account in which individuals live, behave, and perceive. Similarly, research in Social Psychology has largely ignored individual differences when explaining or predicting psychological phenomena. However, recent research has convincingly shown that there is a connection between personality and social relationships, e.g., personality influences interpersonal perceptions or behavior in social relationships and vice versa, i.e., the social context determines personality.

In the current course, we are going to read and discuss recent theoretical papers as well as exciting empirical studies on the relation between personality and social relationships (e.g., zero acquaintance, romantic relationships, friendships). In the first half of the semester, every participant needs to prepare each session by reading the article in question. During the sessions, the texts are discussed and sessions are moderated by participants. In the second half of the semester, we are going to develop our own research ideas by integrating and discussing the concepts covered. After having laid out a design for an empirical study, participants will conduct the study, analyze and interpret the results, and discuss them in class.

The texts in class are in English as is the language of discussion. The rationale behind is that participants get used to English texts (which is the prime language of psychological publications) and to improve their English while speaking. However, it is very important to realize that nobody should be afraid of speaking bad English because a) the teacher is no native speaker and needs to practice her English as well, and b) one intention of the class is to improve one s English and thus, teasing or laughing is not acceptable.
